El ministro de Asuntos Exteriores de España, Josep Borrell, confirmó que su país está dispuesto a reconocer al “Estado de Palestina”.
Borrell afirmó que incluso si la Unión Europea (UE) no logra una decisión unánime sobre ese asunto; Madrid está dispuesto a hacerlo unilateralmente.
Borrell dijo en una conferencia de líderes de la UE en Austria que el reconocimiento de “Palestina” está “sobre la mesa”. El ministro español expresó que iniciará un proceso intensivo para establecer un consenso sobre el asunto, en tanto que la política de la UE es imprecisa con respecto al reconocimiento unilateral.
Varios países europeos han reconocido a “Palestina”, pero esas medidas simbólicas han tenido un menguado efecto diplomático.
El Parlamento español adoptó en 2014 una moción no vinculante, instando al Gobierno de Madrid a reconocer al “Estado de Palestina”.
El presidente palestino, Mahmoud Abbás, ha instado a la Unión Europea a reconocer al “Estado de Palestina” en respuesta el reconocimiento del presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, de Jerusalén como la capital de Israel.
Un total de 139 países han reconocido a la Autoridad Palestina como Estado.
