El Norteamericano de origen judío Arthur Ashkin ganó junto a Gerard Mourou de Francia y Donna Strickland de Canadá el premio Nobel de Física, aunque Ashkin se adjudicó el 50% del mismo mientras que la otra mitad la reparten los otros dos ganadores.
El científico estadounidense se convirtió en el ganador de un premio Nobel de mas edad en toda su historia.
Tres investigadores compartieron el martes el Premio Nobel de Física 2018 por invenciones en el campo de la física láser que han allanado el camino para instrumentos de precisión avanzados utilizados en la cirugía correctiva de ojos y la industria, dijo el jurado.
Arthur Ashkin, de los Estados Unidos, ganó la mitad del premio de nueve millones de coronas suecas (aproximadamente $ 1,01 millones u 870,000 euros), mientras que Gerard Mourou de Francia y Donna Strickland de Canadá compartieron la otra mitad.
Ashkin, de 96 años, fue honrado por su invento de «pinzas ópticas» que atrapan partículas, átomos, virus y otras células vivas con sus dedos de rayo láser.
Con esto pudo usar la presión de radiación de la luz para mover objetos físicos, «un viejo sueño de ciencia ficción», dijo la Real Academia Sueca de Ciencias.
Mientras tanto, Mourou, de 74 años, y Strickland, la tercera mujer en ganar el Premio de Física, ganaron en conjunto desarrollando un método para generar pulsos ópticos ultra cortos, «el pulso láser más corto e intenso jamás creado por la humanidad», el jurado dijo.
Su técnica ahora se utiliza en la cirugía ocular correctiva.
El año pasado, los astrofísicos estadounidenses Barry Barish, Kip Thorne y Rainer Weiss ganaron el premio de física por el descubrimiento de ondas gravitacionales, predicho por Albert Einstein hace un siglo como parte de su teoría de la relatividad general.
