En la víspera del Día de Conmemoración del Holocausto, la Universidad de Tel Aviv, el Centro Kantor y el Congreso Judío Europeo publicaron su informe anual de incidentes violentos antisemitas alrededor del mundo.
Durante el año 2018 se registraron en el mundo 387 ataques físicos con trasfondo antisemita, en comparación con 342 en el año 2017, lo que representa un aumento del 13%.
Además, en países de Europa occidental se produjo un aumento crítico preocupante en casos de antisemitismo violento. En Alemania por ejemplo hubo un aumento de 70% en casos de este tipo.
El país con más casos de violencia física antisemita fue EEUU con más de 100 casos, seguido por Reino Unido con 68 casos, Francia y Alemania con 35 casos cada uno, Canadá con 20, Bélgica con 19, Holanda con 15 y Argentina con 11.
El informe también indica que durante el 2018, 13 judíos fueron asesinados fuera de Israel en ataques antisemitas, lo que representa un récord en las últimas décadas. En este número están incluidos los 11 que fueron asesinados durante el ataque terrorista contra una sinagoga en Pittsburgh.
El Dr. Moshe Kantor, presidente del Congreso Judío Europeo, se refirió al informe y dijo que «si tuviera que resumir en una oración la situación del antisemitismo en el año 2018 y a comienzos del 2019, diría que hay una sensación creciente de situación de emergencia entre los judíos en muchos países del mundo».
Los tipos de eventos antisemitas violentos son en gran parte actos de vandalismo (56%), amenazas (23%) y violencia sin uso de armas (14%). Además se supo que al menos 138 personas fueron atacadas y en 104 casos fueron atacadas propiedades privadas. En 76 casos fueron violentados cementerios y monumentos, en 47 casos fueron atacadas sinagogas y en 22 casos centros comunitarios.
