“Es cierto que el racismo y el antisemitismo nunca desaparecieron. Pero desde hace algún tiempo han sido más visibles y desinhibidos”. Esto expresó dijo Merkel durante una ceremonia para conmemorar el 70 aniversario del Consejo Central Judío en Alemania.
“Es una vergüenza y una fuente de profunda vergüenza para mí ver las expresiones de racismo y antisemitismo en nuestro país en estos tiempos”. «Hago un llamamiento a los ciudadanos alemanes a “no permanecer nunca en silencio”.
El comisionado de antisemitismo del gobierno alemán Félix Klein había advertido en abril que el odio contra los judíos se estaba extendiendo en Alemania. Desde su aparición, crecía junto con el nuevo coronavirus.

Schuster denunció a algunos manifestantes por cooptar un símbolo del Holocausto. Estrellas amarillas similares a las que los judíos fueron obligados a llevar bajo los nazis – para representar su supuesta opresión por las restricciones del virus.
“Conozco a algunos ancianos que tuvieron que llevar esas estrellas”, dijo. “Gente que tuvo que esconderse durante años. Gente que sólo sobrevivió”.
Los crímenes antisemitas han aumentado constantemente en Alemania en los últimos años con 2.032 delitos antisemitas registrados en 2019, un 13 por ciento más que el año anterior.
El pasado octubre, un presunto pistolero neonazi intentó asaltar una sinagoga llena de fieles en la ciudad de Halle en uno de los peores actos de violencia antisemita en la historia de la posguerra del país.
Después de no poder derribar la puerta, mató a tiros a una transeúnte y a un hombre en una tienda de kebab.
“Sabemos lo rápido que las palabras pueden convertirse en acciones, como lo demostró el ataque a la sinagoga de Halle en Yom Kippur el año pasado, de una manera particularmente terrible”, dijo Merkel en la ceremonia.
A unos seis millones de judíos europeos los asesinó el régimen nazi de Adolf Hitler durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
Alemania es ahora el hogar de la tercera mayor población judía de Europa occidental, en gran parte debido a la afluencia de unos 200.000 judíos tras el colapso de la Unión Soviética.
