Al obtener un éxito deportivo cuando hay manejo político se debe explotarlo porque el esfuerzo y constancia del atleta es un logro como grupo social y el de los líderes que lo dirigen.

Los campeonatos mundiales y los juegos olímpicos son una forma de reflejar el poderío de las naciones a veces llegando a emplear incluso hasta el dopaje.

Los acontecimientos deportivos se han empleado en ocasiones para distraer a la ciudadanía de los problemas realmente importantes de la sociedad. Es el famoso “pan y circo” para el pueblo que fuera empleado por los romanos.

El deporte es un espectáculo de masas cuando se emplea por las autoridades con el objetivo deportivo y o para mantener distraídos a la población como en los sistemas totalitarios porque moviliza a las masas para expresar quienes son los buenos y los malos o sea amigos y enemigos.

El deporte tiene capacidad como arma diplomática. Ejemplos: Richard Nixon envió jugadores estadounidenses de ping-pong a China para el deshielo entre ambos países. La tregua olímpica de 1992 en la guerra de la antigua Yugoslavia. También la participación conjunta de las dos Coreas en los Juegos de Pyeongchang de 2018. Hoy es la propuesta de presentar equipos conjuntos en los próximos JJ.OO. de Tokio y de preparar una candidatura conjunta para los de 2032.

Pero el deporte es útil para reforzar la identidad cultural o étnica de una comunidad. Como cuando Nelson Mandela fue elegido presidente de una Sudáfrica que dejaba atrás el régimen racista anterior. Aprovechó el mundial de Rugby de 1995 para conseguir que toda la población apoyara a su equipo nacional. Unió sudafricanos blancos y negros con el objetivo de la reconciliación de los mismos. Mandela dijo: “El deporte tiene el poder de cambiar el mundo y el poder de unir a la gente de una manera que pocas cosas lo pueden hacer”.
