Istvan Kormendi es sobreviviente del Holocausto y a los 97 años continúa desempeñándose como médico en Hungría.

Nacido en 1923 en casa de sus padres, cerca del famoso Barrio del Castillo en la capital húngara, Budapest, Kormendi ha ejercido allí desde que se graduó en 1950.

Si bien se retiró oficialmente en 1989, Kormendi sigue contratado por el sistema de salud estatal y puede recibir pacientes.

“Mi padre era médico e instaló este consultorio en 1920. Yo nací y me crié aquí de niño”, dijo a la AFP en su casa, que también funciona como clínica.

Entre los artefactos almacenados en la parte superior de las estanterías y dentro de los gabinetes médicos se encuentran botellas de boticario antiguas y kits quirúrgicos viejos con fórceps y pinzas.

“En ese momento no había grandes clínicas de salud pública como las hay ahora. Todos los médicos realizaban prácticas en sus apartamentos”, expresó.

Un retrato de su padre con uniforme militar de su servicio como médico durante la Primera Guerra Mundial cuelga de la pared, con otro de Kormendi cuando era niño.

“Así era yo, y esto es en lo que me convertí”, dijo con una sonrisa, señalando primero la pintura y luego a sí mismo.

Inspirado por su padre, el sobreviviente del Holocausto decidió convertirse en médico. Pero debido a su origen judío se le prohibió asistir a la universidad durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Sin desanimarse, continuó asistiendo a clases mientras ocultaba su ascendencia judía a sus compañeros de clase.

Su determinación persistió incluso después de que se le ordenara realizar trabajos forzados junto con miles de judíos tras la ocupación alemana nazi de Hungría, en marzo de 1944.

“Además de dos latas de comida enlatada para sobrevivir, también empaqué en mi mochila dos libros de texto universitarios de tercer año”, expresó.

Escondido en Budapest para evitar la deportación a un campo de exterminio hacia el final de la guerra, Kormendi incluso atendió a un soldado alemán de las SS herido que vio sangrando en la calle. “No se me pasó por la cabeza que él era el enemigo y que probablemente me habría disparado si hubiera sabido que era judío”, agregó.

La pandemia de COVID-19 dificultó su trabajo, admitió. Actualmente trata a la mayoría de los pacientes por teléfono o correo electrónico: «Realmente no me gusta. Es muy importante en la relación médico-paciente tener contacto personal cara a cara».
