La técnica, desarrollada por un equipo dirigido por el profesor Abraham Katzir, de la Facultad de Ciencias Exactas Raymond y Beverly Sackler de la Universidad de Tel Aviv (TAU), se publicó en la revista Medical Physics.

“La idea que nos guió en el desarrollo de la tecnología fue que, en el rango visible, hay varias sustancias, que tienen varios colores, característicos de cada sustancia”, explicó Katzir. “En cambio, en la región infrarroja, varias sustancias tienen una especie de “colores” diferentes, que dependen de la composición química de cada sustancia”.
La tecnología se basa en un conjunto de fibras ópticas especiales que son transparentes a la luz infrarroja. Un extremo de las fibras se conecta a un dispositivo que evalúa los “colores” en el infrarrojo, de acuerdo a un comunicado de prensa.

“Evaluamos que con la ayuda de dispositivos que pueden identificar estos ‘colores’, la piel sana y cada una de las lesiones benignas y malignas tendrían ‘colores’ diferentes que nos permitirían identificar el melanoma”, agregó Katzir.
La diferencia entre el melanoma letal y el menos letal es un milímetro. Cuando una lesión tiene menos de un milímetro de grosor se considera superficial y en una fase inicial de la que el paciente puede recuperarse si se extirpa.
Sin embargo, si se descubre en una fase posterior, cuando tiene un grosor superior a un milímetro, es potencialmente mortal, y las posibilidades de recuperación disminuyen considerablemente.

La nueva tecnología se ha probado en 100 pacientes antes de la biopsia y su diagnóstico ha demostrado ser preciso.
Normalmente, la piel se observa cuidadosamente a través de una lupa conocida como dermatoscopio. Después se realiza la biopsia y se envía a un patólogo para confirmar si se trata de un melanoma.
“El innovador sistema permitirá a todos los dermatólogos determinar automáticamente el carácter de una lesión sospechosa, y en particular si se trata de un melanoma”, aseguró Katzir.
“La tecnología podría provocar un cambio drástico en el campo del diagnóstico y el tratamiento del cáncer de piel”, concluyó.
