El profesor argentino-israelí, Marcelo Sternberg, recibió la máxima distinción académica en China

El profesor argentino-israelí Marcelo Sternberg, del Laboratorio de Ecología Vegetal de la Facultad de Ciencias Vegetales y Seguridad Alimentaria de la Universidad de Tel Aviv, fue distinguido por el gobierno de China con su más alto galardón académico, el Premio Changjiang

Además de Sternberg, también el profesor Ehud Gazit, director del Centro Belvatnik de Desarrollo Farmacéutico de la Facultad de Biología Celular Molecular y Biotecnología de la Universidad de Tel Aviv, recibió el premio concedido por las autoridades de Pekín.

«Cabe señalar que la decisión del gobierno chino de otorgar el premio a investigadores extranjeros se considera muy inusual. Esto da testimonio de la destacada excelencia de los investigadores», afirmó la universidad israelí al anunciar la noticia.

«Me siento honrado y muy feliz de recibir el premio», dijo Sternberg. Lo seleccionaron por su trabajo con la Universidad de Ningxia y su contribución a la investigación sobre el cambio climático y los procesos de desertificación. Un tema significativo y relevante para la región noroeste de China, adonde se encuentra esa casa de altos estudios.

Sternberg, un experto reconocido por sus trabajos de ecología experimental dedicada al estudio de los efectos de la actividad humana sobre los ecosistemas terrestres, subrayó que la zona donde se encuentra la Universidad de Ningxia «enfrenta importantes desafíos relacionados con el clima, incluidos importantes problemas de desertificación».

«Espero sinceramente que mi experiencia y conocimiento en la ecología del cambio climático ayuden a establecer programas de investigación y enseñanza que fortalezcan su base de conocimientos». El tema es «uno de los principales desafíos que enfrenta actualmente la humanidad», afirmó el académico.

El profesor Marcelo Sternberg nació en Argentina y emigró a Israel después de graduarse en Biología por la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba en 1988. En Israel, se graduó en Ecología por la Universidad Hebrea de Jerusalén. Desde el año pasado es profesor titular en la Universidad de Tel Aviv, afirmó el sitio Israel Económico

En el 2018, lo distinguieron con el prestigioso Premio Raíces que se entrega a científicos argentinos trabajando en el exterior. De hecho, el profesor de la Universidad de Tel Aviv es miembro de a Red de Científicos Argentinos en Israel.

El profesor Gazit, por su parte, ganó el Premio Changjiang por su contribución a la investigación conjunta con la Universidad de Xidian. En el campo de la nanotecnología, señalaron desde la Universidad de Tel Aviv.
