Antes de convertirse en uno de los más famosos e innovadores músicos de jazz, Louis Armstrong sufrió la miseria y el racismo. Proveniente de una familia muy pobre, su padre abandonó a su madre, a su hermana y a él cuando era muy pequeño. Criado por su abuela, que había nacido esclava y fue liberada después de la Guerra Civil, descubrió el arte en las calles de Nueva Orleans.

Comenzó a trabajar de niño para ayudar a su mamá, pero el dinero no alcanzaba. Cuando conoció a la familia de inmigrantes judíos lituanos Karnofsky, las cosas comenzaron a cambiar. Ellos lo llevaron a vivir con él, lo aceptaron como a uno más. Según cuenta en su memoria Louis Armstrong y la familia judía de New Orleans, descubrió que también eran discriminados por “otros blancos” y que le enseñaron a vivir con determinación.

La familia Karnofsky era una familia judía, que emigró de Lituania a Estados Unidos, se compadeció de un niño de 7 años y lo llevó a su casa.
Allí se hospedó y pasó la noche en esta casa de familia, donde fue tratado con amabilidad y ternura.

Cuando iba a la cama, la señora Karnovsky le cantaba canciones de cuna rusas, que él cantaba con ella. Posteriormente aprendió a cantar y tocar varias canciones rusas y judías. Con el tiempo, este niño se convirtió en el hijo adoptivo de esta familia.

El Sr. Karnovsky le dio dinero para comprar su primer instrumento musical.
Más tarde, cuando se convirtió en músico y compositor profesional, utilizó estas melodías judías en composiciones como St. James’s Hospital y Go Down Moses.

El niño creció y escribió un libro sobre esta familia, que lo adoptó en 1907. Y con orgullo hablaba yiddish con fluidez.

En memoria de esta familia y hasta el final de su vida, dijo que en esta familia aprendió «a vivir una vida real y con determinación». El nombre de este niño pequeño era: Louis Armstrong.
