Un acto de vandalismo antisemita ocurrió en la Universidad de Tufts el sábado, tras arrancar la mezuzá de la habitación de un estudiante judío.
El presidente de la Universidad, Anthony Mónaco, afirmó que un «estudiante judío descubrió que retiraron su mezuzá del marco de la puerte».
«Independientemente de la intención, la eliminación de este importante símbolo de la fe judía es antisemita y causó daño», escribió Mónaco. “Este es un momento del que todos podemos aprender. Todos los miembros de nuestra comunidad deben sentirse cómodos mostrando y expresando su fe. Y todos los miembros de nuestra comunidad deben respetar esas demostraciones y expresiones», agregó.
Además, Mónaco dijo que el Departamento de Seguridad de la Universidad de Tufts inició una investigación sobre el incidente, pero aún no logró identificar a los responsables.

Por su parte, señaló que la eliminación de la mezuzá se produce en medio de un aumento del antisemitismo en EE.UU., en las instituciones de educación y en la propia Tufts. Mónaco también reafirmó el compromiso de la Universidad de comprender cómo abordar el antisemitismo en la Universidad ubicada en Massachusetts.
“Como compartí con los profesores y el personal, lanzamos una iniciativa para comprender cómo se manifiesta el antisemitismo en Tufts. Esta iniciativa incluye grupos focales y una encuesta de todos los estudiantes de pregrado que saldrá la próxima semana», concluyó Mónaco.
