Israel lanzó con éxito el satélite espía «Ofek-13» al espacio la madrugada del miércoles, dijo el Ministerio de Defensa.
El equipo, el último de una línea de activos de observación israelíes en el espacio, proporcionará a los militares imágenes de mejor calidad que sus predecesores.
“El satélite ‘Ofek-13’ es un satélite de observación [de radar de apertura sintética] con capacidades avanzadas”, dijo el Ministerio de Defensa en un comunicado después del lanzamiento.
El ministro de Defensa, Yoav Gallant, elogió el lanzamiento como “otro ejemplo importante más de la innovación revolucionaria del sistema de defensa israelí”.
“Israel ya ha demostrado sus diversas capacidades espaciales muchas veces y es uno de los pocos países que posee tales capacidades, capacidades que continuamos desarrollando y fortaleciendo”, agregó Gallant.
Una segunda declaración del ministerio, pocas horas después del lanzamiento, dijo que el satélite “entró en órbita con éxito, comenzó a transmitir datos y completó una serie inicial de inspecciones de acuerdo con los planes de lanzamiento originales”.
El ministerio dijo que los ingenieros “continuarían las inspecciones planificadas previamente antes de que comience la actividad operativa completa en un futuro cercano”.
Un vehículo de lanzamiento Shavit disparó el satélite al espacio desde la base aérea y el puerto espacial de Palmachim a las 2:10 am del miércoles por la mañana.
Los residentes del área alrededor del lanzamiento informaron haber escuchado el satélite despegar hacia el espacio.
El desarrollo y la producción del satélite fueron dirigidos por la Administración de Satélites y Espacio del Ministerio de Defensa, y el desarrollo involucró a varios cuerpos de las FDI, incluida la Unidad de inteligencia visual 9900 y la fuerza aérea.
Israel Aerospace Industries fue el principal contratista involucrado en el proyecto. Las empresas de defensa Rafael y Tomer, de propiedad estatal de Israel, produjeron los motores de lanzamiento.
