(Desde Ámsterdam) La cara de Otto Frank lo dice todo. 1960, el padre de Ana Frank vuelve a Ámsterdam 15 años después de haber sobrevivido a Auschwitz, escondido cuando los soldados de las SS abandonaban el campo de exterminio más cruel del nazismo y llevaban a los que tenían como destino la cámara de gas a las caminatas de la muerte por el campo en aquel frío comienzo de 1945. Otto había quedado allí cuando fue llevado junto a su esposa Edith y sus dos hijas Margot y Ana en setiembre de 1944. Pero fue el único que quedó allí. A las mujeres las llevaron a otro campo de concentración, Bergen Belsen, donde Ana murió de tifus, probablemente en febrero o marzo, apenas dos meses antes de que terminara la guerra en el frente europeo.
Otto, en esa foto tomada en 1960, se muestra exhausto. Tanto como aquel que logra su cometido y cuando puede respirar en paz lo asalta el dolor. Otto fue el único sobreviviente de los siete que estaban refugiados en esa casa, escondidos en la parte de atrás, ayudados por un matrimonio de neerlandeses solidarios, que no eran judíos pero que sentían la ofensa de los crímenes del nazismo como lo que eran, delitos contra la humanidad.
La historia de la familia Frank no es muy distinta a la de otras familias alemanas judías. Otto venía de varias generaciones de judíos que vivían en Frankfurt. Alquilaba una vivienda con su esposa y sus hijas cuando Adolf Hitler ascendió al poder en 1933. En ese momento, el propietario no les extendió el contrato y ya muchas familias judías buscaban destinos en otros países. Otto decidió evacuar a su familia. En agosto de ese año, se trasladaron a Aquisgrán, una ciudad alemana lindera con Países Bajos donde residía su suegra. Desde allí planeó el traslado para residir en Ámsterdam.
En medio de la tormenta del nazismo, esa ciudad les daba un reparo y Otto pudo trabajar razonablemente bien. Sin embargo, en mayo de 1940, la Wehrmacht invadió Países Bajos y el jefe de la familia Frank debió renunciar a las empresas que había montado, sobre todo vinculadas al rubro de alimentos. No se dio por vencido y logró asociarse con gente del lugar para que su nombre no figurara y poder sostener a los suyos. Desde 1938 empezó a frecuentar la embajada de Estados Unidos para lograr visas y cambiar de continente.
Sin otras chances a la vista, cuando comenzó la deportación sistemática de judíos de los Países Bajos en el verano de 1942, Otto tomó la decisión de llevar a su familia a la clandestinidad. Planeó todo, hasta la solidaridad de quienes se arriesgarían para llevarles comida en “la casa de atrás”.
El 6 de julio de ese 1942 hicieron la mudanza sin llamar la atención y se instalaron en las habitaciones de la planta alta de la empresa Opekta. Una gran estantería era la entrada oculta al albergue.
Fue una lucha titánica. Pero era imposible que los nazis no los descubrieran. La foto de 1960 en esa casa tiene el recorrido de aquellos años. Y ahora estaba sin sus hijas ni su esposa.
El padre de Ana ya había publicado el diario de su hija. Los cuadernos sobrevivieron también por puras coincidencias por lo menos poco frecuentes. La pequeña Ana, de 14 años, cumplía la orden de poner las cosas de valor en una valija para ser llevada prisionera. La orden la daban los asaltantes de las SS, y cuando vieron que la niña ponía cuadernos y libros vaciaron la valija y metieron objetos de algún valor material.
Terminada la guerra, los dueños de casa volvieron y, entre todo lo tirado, rescataron los manuscritos de Ana y se los dieron al padre. Otto, no bien pudo, empezó a rastrear a su mujer y sus hijas. Se enteró del terrible destino. La foto que le tomaron a Otto 15 después es la parte de atrás de la casa, donde estaban escondidos, donde Ana escribió su diario.
Otto lo publicó como La casa de atrás. Como suele suceder en las tragedias, pasa tiempo hasta que una historia singular se convierte en un símbolo. Este cronista está en la Casa de atrás, en el verano de Ámsterdam, escuchando atentamente a Héctor Shalom, director del Centro Ana Frank Argentina, psicólogo, pedagogo, que desde hace tres décadas sabe enhebrar ese libro singular con historias que vulneran otros derechos y despiertan otras esperanzas. Por eso, este año Shalom invitó a Estela Barnes de Carlotto, la presidenta de Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, que llegó a Ezeiza y hasta el avión fue en una silla de ruedas acompañada de su hija Claudia. A Estela le pesa el cuerpo y mantiene la sonrisa impecable y contagiosa. Bajó en Ámsterdam y tendrá una semana intensa junto a muchos jóvenes latinoamericanos que viajaron para hacer esta experiencia única: poder identificarse, poder aprender de esta historia tan chiquita como universal que permitieron que El diario de Ana Frank fuera traducido a un centenar de idiomas y que haya 30 centros como el que preside Shalom en Buenos Aires.

Ámsterdam 2023 es una megaciudad, llena de museos, el de Ana Frank tiene siempre largas colas. Mientras alguien espera para entrar puede mirar un canal por donde pasan barcazas de paseo, miles de bicicletas, tranvías, también puede planear ir a comer o a algún café donde pueda conseguir un buen cannabis legal, puede pasar por la puerta de la imponente Casa Real, al lado del monumento a los resistentes neerlandeses de la segunda guerra.
Pasaron algo más de ocho décadas de estos hechos. El cronista mira a Otto Frank, sabe que el cansancio que reflejan sus ojos deja entrever la certeza de que valdría la pena el esfuerzo de volver a esa casa, de evitar que se derrumbara y de poner el marcha el museo.
