La inédita historia de los musulmanes que salvaron a miles de judíos del Holocausto

Albania fue uno de los pocos países europeos que al final de la II Guerra Mundial tenía una población judía mayor que al inicio.

Las familias albanesas, en su mayoría musulmanas, recibieron a en sus casas y protegieron a miles de refugiados de países como Alemania y Austria que huían de la persecución del régimen nazi.

Ya en 1938, un año antes del inicio de la guerra, el rey Zog I de Albania había ofrecido asilo político a más de 300 judíos, a los que se les concedió incluso la ciudadanía albanesa.

Pero la protección desde el poder no duró mucho. En 1939 Italia invadió Albania, lo declaró su protectorado y el rey Zog I se vio obligado a huir. Con el país bajo las órdenes de Benito Mussolini, se hizo más difícil para los judíos entrar en el país.

Sin embargo, para 1945 Albania llegó al final de la guerra con más 3.000 judíos refugiados en su territorio. Esta elevada cifra se explica por la tradicional solidaridad de sus ciudadanos y un código de honor llamado «Besa».

«Los albaneses acogieron a los judíos en sus familias, los alimentaron, los cuidaron, los escondieron. Y cada vez que las cosas se volvían más peligrosas, encontraban formas de trasladarlos a otros lugares«, le explicó a la BBC Shirley Cloyes DioGuardi, de la Liga Cívica Estadounidense Albanesa en Estados Unidos.

Muchos de los que ayudaron a los refugiados eran personas que no estaban involucradas ni en política ni en movimientos sociales sino que simplemente tenían un espíritu humanitario.

Ese es el caso de Arslan Rezniqi, un comerciante de alimentos que arriesgó su vida y la de su familia para salvar a cientos de refugiados judíos, según cuenta Helena Bonham Carter en el podcast History’s Secret Heroes.

La familia de Arslan era musulmana, religión mayoritaria en Albania, donde solo el 17% de la población es cristiana, pero él se consideraba ante todo parte de la comunidad albanesa, orgullosa de su carácter humanitario, que aún hoy responde al código «Besa».
