El príncipe William del Reino Unido habló de su preocupación por el aumento del antisemitismo desde el 7 de octubre.
Durante una visita a una sinagoga en Londres, el príncipe William les dijo a estudiantes judíos y representantes del Holocaust Educational Trust (HET) que él y su esposa, la princesa Catherine, estaban “extremadamente preocupados por el aumento del antisemitismo”.
Con una kipá azul marino para el encuentro en la sinagoga Western Marble Arch, el futuro rey “escuchó cómo organizaciones como el HET están implementando programas para abordar el odio y fomentar la cohesión entre comunidades”, informó The Jewish Chronicle.
En una conversación con tres estudiantes judíos y tres embajadores del HET, el príncipe condenó el antisemitismo que los estudiantes describieron experimentar en el campus. «Los prejuicios no tienen cabida en la sociedad», afirmó.
«Lo dije antes y lo diré de nuevo. Quiero que todos sepan que pueden hablar sobre esto y sus experiencias», continuó. «Tanto Catherine como yo estamos extremadamente preocupados por el aumento del antisemitismo y lamento mucho si alguno de ustedes experimentó eso. No tiene lugar. Es por eso que estoy aquí hoy para asegurarles a todos que a la gente sí le importa y escucha y no podemos dejar que eso pase”, aseveró.

El Reino Unido experimentó en 2023 un año récord en cuanto a atentados antisemitas. Se registaron más de 4.100 incidentes principalmente en el período posterior a la masacre que cometió Hamás en Israel el 7 de octubre. En su intervención en la cena anual del Community Security Trust( CST) el miércoles por la noche, el primer ministro británico, Rishi Sunak, condenó el aumento y prometió 68 millones de dólares adicionales en financiación para combatir la continua propagación del antisemitismo.
Edward Isaacs, presidente de la Unión de Estudiantes Judíos, le dijo a William que el antisemitismo transformó las experiencias de los judíos que estudiaban en las universidades británicas.
«Si no fuiste una víctima, conoces a alguien que sí lo fue», aseguró Isaacs. «Ha creado un miedo como nunca antes».
El príncipe también se reunió con Renee Salt, una sobreviviente del Holocausto de 94 años, en el santuario principal de la sinagoga.
Salt, reclusa de los campos de concentración de Auschwitz y Bergen-Belsen, le contó a William su temor de que “algunos de los jóvenes ni siquiera crean que [el Holocausto] haya ocurrido alguna vez. Eso es muy malo». Tomando su mano, el príncipe respondió: «Todo mejorará».
