El profesor israelí Avi Wigderson, un reconocido investigador egresado del Technion cuyo trabajo resultó clave para el desarrollo de los algoritmos que utilizamos día a día, fue elegido para recibir el Turing Award, considerado el «premio Nobel» de la computación.
Dotado con un millón de dólares, el premio llega apenas tres años después de que Wigderson, que actualmente se desempeña como profesor de matemáticas en el Instituto de Estudios Avanzados de Princeton, en Nueva Jersey, ganara el Premio Abel 2021 por sus contribuciones a la informática.
El trabajo teórico del científico israelí, recordó la prensa especializada, resultó «clave para el desarrollo de numerosos avances en informática, desde redes en la nube hasta métodos de criptografía que sustentan las criptomonedas«.
Wigderson recibió en el 2023 un doctorado honorario del Technion, la famosa universidad tecnológica de Haifa, en el norte de Israel.
En aquella oportunidad, el profesor fue distinguido por «su importante contribución y liderazgo en los campos de la teoría de la informática y la matemática discreta, incluida la teoría de la complejidad, la criptografía, los gráficos en expansión y más».
Una «fuerza intelectual imponente»
Ahora, Avi Wigderson -nacido precisamente en Haifa, en 1956- fue elegido para recibir el premio Turing que concede la Association for Computing Machinery (Asociación de Maquinaria Computacional), creada en 1947 con base en Nueva York.
Wigderson, dijo Yannis Ioannidis, el presidente de la ACM, es «una fuerza intelectual imponente» en el terreno de la informática teórica, «una disciplina apasionante que atrae a algunos de los investigadores jóvenes más prometedores para trabajar en los desafíos más difíciles».
Otro notable científico de la computación, Jeff Dean, uno de los vicepresidentes de Google, afirmó que el trabajo de Wigderson sobre la aleatoriedad y otros temas «marcó la agenda de la informática teórica durante las últimas tres décadas».
«Desde los primeros días de la informática -continuó Dean-, los investigadores reconocieron que incorporar la aleatoriedad era una forma de diseñar algoritmos más rápidos para una amplia gama de aplicaciones».
Y todavía hoy, «los esfuerzos por comprender mejor la aleatoriedad siguen generando importantes beneficios para nuestro campo y Wigderson abrió nuevos horizontes en esta área», completó el directivo de Google.
Egresado del Technion
Avi Wigderson completó su licenciatura en la Facultad de Ciencias de la Computación del Technion en 1980.
Luego obtuvo una maestría y un doctorado en Estados Unidos. Su libro Mathematics and Computation: A Theory Revolutionizing Technology and Science, es considerado un hito en el campo de la teoría de la informática.
«Estamos muy orgullosos de que sea un alumno del Technion con una conexión de larga data con nuestra comunidad de investigadores» el ganador del «Nobel» de la computación, dijo el profesor Uri Sivan, presidente de la universidad tecnológica israelí.
Wigderton, agregó el decano de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Computación del Technion, el profesor Danny Raz, es «un brillante investigador tanto en matemáticas como en informática, y en su interfaz», y «realmente merece este estimado premio».
