Diego Schwartzman ya es un grande del tenis mundial. Este martes inolvidable, batalló durante 5h08m para ganarle por los cuartos de Roland Garros a su amigo Dominic Thiem, y llegó a las semifinales del Grand Slam de París y se metió entre los diez mejores del mundo. El resultado fue de 7-6 (1), 5-7, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (5) y 6-2.
En el set inicial ambos se quebraron una vez hasta llegar al tie-break, instancia en la que El argentino se impuso 7-1 para levarse el set en 1h 01mts.
Thiem cometió más errores (19 a 13) y metió más winners (19-11) pero desapareció en el desempate; hasta allí, Schwartzman había ganado apenas dos puntos más (38 a 36).
Hubo una jugada polémica, con la cual Thiem quebró para 4-2 tras una bola que la jueza vio en la línea pero el porteño le reclamaba que había picado afuera. Ambos veían el mismo pique pero no se ponían de acuerdo; al cabo se tomó la decisión de la jueza. En el polvo de ladrillo no hay Ojo de Halcón.

Thiem le quebró al comienzo del segundo, pero Schwartzman se la devolvió para el 3-3 luego de mantener un game clave en el 3-2 con lluvia y viento, que obligó a frenar las acciones unos minutos, pero no fue necesario cerrar el techo y siguieron.
Los dos se devolvían todo y el Peque cerraba bien los puntos en la red. Thiem parecía cansado, hasta que llegaron al 4-4 con el saque del argentino, un game que duró ¡16 minutos!; el austríaco tuvo siete break points, pero el porteño pudo mantenerlo. El game clave fue el 4-5 al saque Thiem: estuvo 15-30 y Schwartzman desperdició una pelota increíble que lo hubiese puesto con doble match point («no puedo parar de pensar en la pelota que erré», se repetía). Luego, el Peque siguió enganchado y equivocándose; el europeo aprovechó e hilvanó tres games para ganarlo 7-5. Ya iban 2h12m de un partido largo.
¿Por qué iba a ser diferente el tercero? Sí hubo más errores y menos puntos largos. Se habían quebrado dos veces cada uno y llegó la tercera del Peque, que sacó 5-3, pero lo perdió en cero ese game para que otra vez llegaran equilibrados al final del capítulo. El primer set point fue para el argento, que en el 4-5 y saque 30-40 de Thiem no lo pudo aprovechar por un revés largo. Otra vez, como en los dos sets anteriores, llegaban 5-5.

Quizá frustrado por la oportunidad perdida, Peque seguía reprochándose y hasta pidiéndole al poco público -se permiten hasta 1.000 por día- que no lo alentaran más. Mientras tanto, Thiem seguía enfocado y quebraba para 6-5, pero luego desaprovechó su chance y llegaron a un segundo tie-break. Tras ir 5-1, a Thiem casi se le escapa pero lo cerró 8-6. Ya era un maratón de 3h21m.
El cuarto empezó mal para Peque, con el 2-0 a favor del austríaco. Para peor, las ampollas comenzaron a molestar al argentino, que pidió tiempo para que el médico le colocara una crema en su mano derecha y apósitos, parecía la mano de una momia. Quizá el parate le vino bien al Peque, que lo igualó, quebró y se puso 4-2. ya habían pasado cuatro horas, atardecía en París y en la cancha se prendían las luces. Adentro no había tanto brillo, sino esfuerzo. era el 18° set en el torneo para Thiem, dos menos para Diego, que sacó 5-3 para igualarlo y hasta tuvo tres sets points (40-0), pero no lo pudo cerrar. Así llegaron al tie-break, que el Peque se lo llevó 7-5. Sumaban 4h34m. El quinto es largo, no hay tie-break…
Pero no. El Peque lo resolvió bien y lo ganó en su primer match point. Diego Schwartzman está entre los grandes del tenis mundial.
