Meyers Leonard, pívot suplente de los Miami Heat de la NBA, fue multado este jueves con 50.000 dólares y apartado del equipo durante una semana por pronunciar un insulto antisemita durante una partida de videojuego retransmitida en directo por Internet.
En un comunicado, la liga de basquetbol señaló que Leonard fue «suspendido de todas las instalaciones y actividades de los Heat durante una semana por un comentario antisemita realizado el lunes».
Además, el jugador de 29 años, «deberá participar en un programa de diversidad cultural», señaló el texto.
«El comentario de Meyers Leonard fue inexcusable e hiriente. Un término tan ofensivo no tiene cabida en la NBA ni en nuestra sociedad», recalcó el comisionado de la Liga, Adam Silver, en el comunicado.
«Hemos comunicado a Meyers que no se tolerarán comentarios despectivos como éste y que se espera que mantenga los valores fundamentales de nuestra liga -igualdad, tolerancia, inclusión y respeto- en todo momento de cara al futuro», afirmó el comisionado.
A principios de la semana, se difundió en redes sociales un vídeo en el que se escucha a Leonard pronunciar el insulto.
En una partida del juego Call of Duty que fue transmitida por Twitch, la plataforma gamer por excelencia del mercado, el gigante de 2.13 metros realizó un comentario antisemita cuando estaba en plena actividad: “¡Maldito cobarde! ¡No me dispares, jodido ‘kike’!”, fueron las palabras que utilizó el basquetbolista de 29 años. Justamente, el terminó kike es una palabra que se está marcada como un insulto a la comunidad judía.
También, los Miami Heat apartaron el martes al jugador de forma indefinida mientras la NBA realizaba su investigación.
El pívot, que no juega desde enero por una lesión de hombro que le tendrá de baja el resto de la campaña, pidió disculpas por su comentario.
El miércoles, Meyers «habló con representantes de la Liga Antidifamación para entender mejor el impacto de sus palabras. Aceptamos que está realmente arrepentido», dijo el comisionado Silver.
El año pasado, el pívot fue uno de los pocos jugadores que no se arrodilló durante el himno estadounidense en los playoffs. Siendo un gesto que la comunidad NBA adoptó en protesta contra el racismo y la brutalidad policial contra personas negras.
Pese a esto, el pasado noviembre, los Heat extendieron el contrato de Leonard por dos años a cambio de 19,5 millones de dólares. De todas formas, tienen una opción para rescindirlo al término de la primera campaña.
