El Senado de EE. UU. confirmó este martes por 52 votos a favor y 48 en contra a la médica judía estadounidense Rachel Levine como subsecretaria de Salud en el gobierno de Joe Biden.

Se trata de la primera funcionaria federal transgénero en ser confirmada por el Senado norteamericano informó Enlace Judío.

“Como ha dicho la vicepresidenta [Kamala] Harris, reconozco que puedo ser la primera, pero me alienta saber que no seré la última”, escribió en su mensaje. “Cuando asuma este puesto me apoyaré en los hombros de quienes vinieron antes, personas que conocemos a lo largo de la historia y cuyos nombres nunca sabremos porque se vieron obligados a vivir y trabajar en las sombras”.
“Sé que todos los días uno se enfrenta a muchos desafíos difíciles. Lamentablemente, algunos de los desafíos que uno enfrenta provienen de personas que buscarían usar su identidad y circunstancias como un arma. Duele. Lo sé. No puedo prometer que estos ataques cesarán de inmediato, pero haré todo lo posible para apoyarlo y defenderlo”.

El político judío Chuck Schumer, líder de la mayoría en el Senado, celebró la decisión.

“La confirmación de Rachel Levine representa otro hito importante para la comunidad LGBTQ estadounidense“, dijo, de acuerdo con la cadena CNN.

“Dado que los estadounidenses transgénero sufren tasas más altas de abuso, falta de vivienda y depresión que casi cualquier otro grupo, es importante contar con figuras nacionales como la Dra. Levine que, en virtud de estar en el centro de atención pública, ayudarán a derribar las barreras de la ignorancia y el miedo”.

En una declaración en enero al anunciar su nominación, Biden dijo que Levine “aportará el liderazgo constante y la experiencia esencial que necesitamos para que las personas superen esta pandemia, sin importar su código postal, raza, religión, orientación sexual, identidad de género o discapacidad, y satisfacer las necesidades de salud pública de nuestro país en este momento crítico y más allá”.

Levine, de 63 años y especializada en pediatría, nació y se crio en Massachusetts. En 2015 habló con el Pittsburgh Jewish Chronicle sobre cómo su identidad influyó su fe. Creció dentro del judaísmo conservador, pero ahora se inclina más hacia el judaísmo reformista, notando sus avances al abrazar a las personas transgénero, de acuerdo con The Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
