La congresista demócrata Ilhan Omar recibió una lluvia de críticas luego de comparar explícitamente a Estados Unidos e Israel con Hamás y los talibanes.

Omar sugirió que todos deberían enfrentar la «justicia» por los abusos a los derechos humanos.

«Debemos tener el mismo nivel de responsabilidad y justicia para todas las víctimas de crímenes de lesa humanidad», twitteó la congresista, mientras compartía un segmento de video de un intercambio ese día con el secretario de Estado de EE.UU, Antony Blinken, durante una audiencia presupuestaria del Comité de Asuntos Exteriores de la Cámara de Representantes.

“Vimos atrocidades impensables cometidas por Estados Unidos, Hamás, Israel, Afganistán y los talibanes. Le pregunté a Blinken dónde se supone que debe ir la gente por justicia”, escribió Omar.

En el intercambio con Blinken, Omar no mencionó las acciones de EE.UU., pero preguntó sobre las tomadas en Israel y los territorios palestinos, así como en Afganistán.

“No vi ninguna prueba en ninguno de los casos de que los tribunales nacionales puedan procesar presuntos crímenes de guerra y de lesa humanidad. Y quisiera enfatizar que en Israel y Palestina, esto incluye crímenes cometidos tanto por las fuerzas de seguridad israelíes como por Hamás. En Afganistán, esto incluye crímenes cometidos por el gobierno nacional afgano y los talibanes”, continuó la funcionaria.

Por su parte, Blinken, hablando del conflicto del mes pasado entre Israel y Hamás, respondió que es «imposible no sentirse profundamente conmovido no solo por la pérdida de vidas en la violencia y el conflicto recientes, sino especialmente por los niños cuyas vidas se perdieron». A su vez, dijo: «Creo que ninguno de nosotros desde cualquier perspectiva puede perder de vista eso».

Sin embargo, Blinken manifestó que las investigaciones de la CPI fueron inapropiadas. Y que tanto EE.UU. como Israel “tienen los mecanismos para asegurarse de que exista responsabilidad en cualquier situación en la que haya preocupaciones sobre el uso de la fuerza y ​​los derechos humanos».

Omar fue duramente criticada en Twitter por el intercambio y sus comentarios mientras compartía el video. El Centro Simon Wiesenthal, a su vez, pidió que «la despojen de sus asignaciones en el comité por acusar a EE.UU. de crímenes de lesa humanidad».
