Aunque los funcionarios también creen que puede haber múltiples muertes, hasta ahora solo confirmaron al menos una persona fallecida después de que un edificio se derrumbó parcialmente en el barrio judío de Surfside, Miami, Florida, en la madrugada del jueves.

El alcalde, en una conferencia de prensa, expresó el temor de que la torre se derrumbara por completo. También se encontraban dentro del edificio los actores argentinos Nicolás Vázquez y Gimena Accardi, quienes sobrevivieron al derrumbe
El alcalde dijo que 15 unidades familiares salieron del edificio. Diez personas fueron tratadas en el lugar y dos fueron llevadas al hospital, sin embargo, CBS informa que hubo nueve hospitalizaciones hasta ahora. Una de ellas fue la única víctima mortal confirmada, según el alcalde.  Añadió que es probable que todavía haya varios apartamentos sin contabilizar. 
El edificio de 12 pisos llamado Champlain Towers está ubicado en 8777 Collins Avenue junto a 88th Street, en el corazón de uno de los barrios judíos de Miami. Fue construido en 1981. 

Un hotel vecino fue evacuado porque no pueden garantizar que los edificios sean estables.

«Es difícil imaginar cómo puede suceder esto», dijo el alcalde. «Los edificios no se caen simplemente».

Barry Cohen, de 63 años, vivía en el edificio del barrio judío de Miami desde 2018 y estaba profundamente dormido cuando se derrumbó parte del edificio. 

«Miramos hacia nuestro balcón y había polvo saliendo», dijo. «Podíamos ver el exterior desde el interior».

Cohen y otros residentes del edificio fueron rescatados por Miami Dade Fire Rescue. 

«Pueden rescatar a algunas personas … pero escuché algunos gritos», dijo un residente del edificio a Sam Brock de NBC Miami. «Perdí a muchos amigos, parte del edificio está arruinado».
