Más de 12.000 personas se preparan para correr en la Maratón de Jerusalén, que se llevará a cabo el próximo viernes, y entre los participantes habrá un israelí de 95 años. Leon (Larry) Rich participó en competiciones deportivas durante toda su vida y en los últimos diez años lo hizo en la maratón de la capital israelí.

Rich nació en Birmingham, Inglaterra, en 1925. En su juventud jugó al fútbol y pasó la mayor parte de su adolescencia entre varios internados para jóvenes en todo el país. Cuando le comentaron acerca de la Maratón de Jerusalén, pensó que eso era exactamente lo que necesitaba, por lo que la conexión entre Rich y ese evento deportivo comenzó en 2010 contó Ynet.

Este objetivo incrementó la motivación de Rich para participar en la maratón, la cual suele correr con una camiseta que lleva el nombre de la asociación.
 
Desde que la maratón se lanzó hace diez años, Rich participó en el tramo de cinco kilómetros de la carrera. Con el paso de los años, sus hijos y nietos comenzaron a correr con él. Y este año, por primera vez, su bisnieta de tres meses de edad estará allí para apoyarlo. A excepción de la pandemia, que provocó la cancelación de la Maratón de Jerusalén en 2020, Rich no permitió que nada lo detuviera. Fue hospitalizado varias veces, en una oportunidad incluso por una fractura de costilla, pero eso no le impidió regresar a la carrera.
 
Este año participará en la carrera de dos kilómetros con andador debido a una lesión que sufrió hace dos años. Después de someterse a una cirugía y de discutir el asunto con su familia, Rich accedió a usar un andador durante la maratón. Será para mantener el equilibrio y sobre todo para calmar a los preocupados familiares.
 
«Creemos que esta es la razón que lo motiva a levantarse todas las mañanas, es lo que lo hace seguir sintiéndose joven. Incluso tiene una cuidadora que no le permite dejar de soñar en grande», comenta una familiar. Rich sale a entrenar todas las mañanas, incluso antes del desayuno.
