El futuro ya llegó: un “Robotaxi” sin chofer recorrió Jerusalén de noche

La empresa israelí Mobileye, una subsidiaria del gigante multinacional Intel, reveló un video sin editar, de 40 minutos, adonde se ve un “robotaxi” sin chofer recorrer las calles de Jerusalén de noche.

En el video, con imágenes que hasta hace poco tiempo parecían de ciencia ficción, se puede ver al automóvil circular vacío. Se ve a su volante moviéndose “solo”, sin ningún problema, por la capital de Israel, reportó Israel Económico.

Durante el test, los ingenieros de Mobileye probaron el sistema de detección True Redundancy para circular con manos libres. Lo calificaron de “hito importante” en la preparación para el debut de sus servicios de “robotaxi” en Israel y también en Alemania.

Desde la empresa explicaron que el video muestra el vehículo autónomo (VA) Mobileye cumpliendo “los movimientos de un servicio de ‘robotaxi’.  Conduciendo a múltiples destinos y deteniéndose donde podría recoger y dejar pasajeros“.

“Si bien los videos anteriores sin editar mostraban al vehículo autónomo conduciendo solo con el subsistema de la cámara -indicó la compañía en un comunicado-, esta nueva entrega proviene del VA completamente configurado que Mobileye planea usar en implementaciones comerciales del ‘robotaxi’”, expresaron.

True Redundancy, señalaron, es un “enfoque único de Mobileye” para la detección ambiental del entorno de los vehículos autónomos. Es a través de dos subsistemas independientes. Uno solamente de cámara y el otro una combinación de radar y lidar. Este último es un dispositivo que permite determinar distancias con un emisor láser.

A lo largo del video se pueden ver hermosos escenarios de la ciudad de Jerusalén. También cómo el vehículo se desplaza entre otros automóviles, ciclistas, motociclistas y peatones, sin que ninguno de ellos perciba la presencia del revolucionario VA.

El vehículo, describió Mobileye, completa “complejas maniobras de conducción del mundo real. Esto es a pesar de la fuerte iluminación nocturna de la carretera y las señales de tráfico complicadas”.

El “comportamiento” de la conducción autónoma se nota “muy humano”. Se obseva al VA realizando “maniobras muy desafiantes sin problemas”, describió el comunicado.

Para la filial de Intel, la demostración de True Redundancy en calles reales “ayuda a disipar el pasado escepticismo de la industria. Se dudaba si el enfoque de vanguardia de Mobileye para la detección ambiental podría funcionar”.

“La forma muy normal en la que el vehículo navega por escenarios muy complejos demuestra el valor de este enfoque“. Eso aseguró Johann Jungwirth, vicepresidente de Movilidad como Servicio de Mobileye.

Algunos de los test anteriores se habían realizado en Tel Aviv, y también en Alemania. En el 2021, Intel anunció que París se sumará a las pruebas con los taxis autónomos.

Nacida como una startup en Jerusalén en 1999, Mobileye fue adquirida por Intel en el 2017 por alrededor de 15.300 millones de dólares.

Desde entonces, la compañía fundada por Amnon Shashua se posicionó como una de las más importantes del sector.

En marzo de este año, cuando se anunció la próxima salida de Mobileye a la bolsa, se estimó una cotización de unos 50.000 millones de dólares para la empresa israelí.
