La Asamblea Rabínica Latinoamericana y el Seminario Rabínico Latinoamericano expresaron en forma conjunta una profunda preocupación por la decisión de la Knéset del Estado de Israel de aprobar en primera lectura un proyecto de ley que otorgaría al Rabinato ortodoxo el control exclusivo de todo el Muro Occidental (Kotel), el lugar más sagrado donde judíos de todo el mundo rezan.
La propuesta pretende extender la autoridad exclusiva del Rabinato ortodoxo también al sector conocido como La Plaza Igualitaria, espacio que permite la oración conjunta de hombres y mujeres y la celebración familiar de ceremonias religiosas.
El fenómeno trasciende el Muro Occidental. Forma parte de una avanzada que procura concentrar en la autoridad religiosa en una sola interpretación del judaísmo.
La mayoría de los judíos de mundo no pertenece a la ortodoxia. Desconocer su legitimidad en el principal símbolo nacional del pueblo judío, envía un mensaje de exclusión.
Polémica en Israel por la «Ley del Muro Occidental»
Además, anteriormente, desde las organizaciones, reafirmaron el compromiso con un judaísmo abierto, diverso y respetuoso de distintas tradiciones, «y sostenemos que cualquier norma religiosa que excluya o limite derechos espirituales dentro del pueblo judío va en contra de los valores fundamentales de justicia, equidad y respeto mutuo que nos definen como pueblo».
Afirman que este cambio legislativo representa un serio riesgo para el pluralismo religioso y para la unidad del pueblo judío en Israel y en la diáspora. El Muro Occidental no es propiedad exclusiva de una sola corriente religiosa, sino un patrimonio espiritual compartido por judíos conservadores, reformistas, masortíes, igualitarios y tradicionales de todo el mundo. Excluir o limitar la posibilidad de rezar de muchas maneras dentro del judaísmo es un mensaje profundamente divisivo para millones de comunidades judías que valoran la libertad de culto.
