Héctor Timerman concedió una entrevista a la agencia internacional Reuters luego de que el juezDaniel Rafecas desestimara imputarlo en la denuncia que había presentado el fiscal Alberto Nisman antes de morir. Aliviado, el canciller argentino defendió una vez más la decisión de firmar un memorándum de entendimiento con Irán para investigar el atentado a la AMIA.
«Sé perfectamente que no habíamos cometido ningún delito», alegó el ministro de Relaciones Exteriores. Aseguró además que con el documento firmado sólo se buscó avanzar con las investigaciones del peor atentado terrorista. Pero nunca entró en vigor porque fue declarado inconstitucional por la justicia argentina.
Timerman insistió en que tanto el gobierno de Néstor Kirchner como el de Cristina Kirchner hicieron «todo lo posible durante muchos años para lograr que la Justicia pueda actuar, interrogar a los sospechosos, decidir si los sospechosos son culpables y castigarlos». «La única manera de solucionarlo si ellos no pueden extraditar y nosotros no podemos juzgar en ausencia, es (…) que el juez argentino viaje al lugar donde están los sospechosos y tome las indagatorias», sostuvo.
Pero Nisman denunció apenas días antes de morir que el acuerdo con Irán buscaba deslindar la responsabilidad de los sospechosos del atentado a cambio de incrementar el comercio bilateral. Días más tarde, el fiscal general para la investigación del atentado a la AMIA fue hallado muerto con un disparo en la cabeza junto a un arma en su departamento, un día antes de que fuera a presentarse en el Congreso para hablar de su denuncia.
Funcionarios del Gobierno calificaron la denuncia de Nisman como «ridícula» y sugirieron que ex agentes de inteligencia habrían influido sobre el fiscal para que presentara la acusación para desestabilizar a la presidenta.
Timerman no dejó pasar la oportunidad de criticar a Nisman por haber tenido contactos con la embajada de Estados Unidos durante su investigación. «Era como que recibía asesoramiento o informaba a la Embajada de Estados Unidos de hechos que no debería haber informado porque era un fiscal de la República Argentina, no tenía nada que hacer en la Embajada de Estados Unidos», dijo.
