La tecnología ha avanzado mucho en el ámbito de la calidad de vida de personas discapacitadas. Cada vez vemos más compañías que se interesan por ayudar a estas personas para que puedan adaptarse de manera óptima a la vida diaria. Un ejemplo de esto son los exoesqueletos, que ayudan a las personas con problemas de movilidad.
Uno de estos ejemplos lo pudimos ver recientemente en Israel, donde existe una amplia base de emprendedores que innovan para mejorar la calidad de vida de las personas discapacitadas. En dicho país, la inversión para investigación y desarrollo se ubica en el 4,1 por ciento del PIB, superado solo por Corea del Norte con el 4,3 por ciento para este mismo fin.
Emprendimiento al servicio de los discapacitados
Tuvimos la oportunidad de asisitir a la quinta conferencia internacional sobre tecnología en servicios de accesibilidad en Tel Aviv, donde vimos varios emprendimientos al servicio de las personas discapacitadas. Uno de estos emprendimientos es Rewalk, un exoesqueleto que permite volver a caminar a las personas que han sufrido una lesión en la espina dorsal. El dispositivo está diseñado para que sea usado diariamente, por lo cual cuenta con baterías recargables que mueven los motores ubicados en partes importantes como la cadera y las piernas.
El exoesqueleto se controla a través de un reloj que está conectado inalámbricamente al dispositivo y permite a la persona sentarse, ponerse de pie y caminar. Una vez ajustado al cuerpo, el exoesqueleto siente la inclinación hacia adelante del tronco de la persona y empieza a mover los motores que dan los pasos para comenzar a caminar.
La empresa ofrece dos versiones del Rewalk, una para rehabilitaciones y otra para uso personal, esta última tiene un precio de 77.000 dólares. Si bien es un dispositivo que puede ser costoso para muchas personas, su importancia radica en que esta tecnología puede ser el inicio para nuevos avances que en el futuro permitan el desarrollo de nuevos equipos de menor precio.
