La venta de aviones israelíes ayudaría a romper el embargo que mantiene Gran Bretaña sobre la Argentina desde que culminó la guerra de Malvinas, en 1982. Recientemente, una operación del país sudamericano para comprar aviones coreanos se canceló porque las naves poseen tecnología británica.

A fines de octubre, el embajador argentino en Seúl, Corea, recibió una carta de la Industria Aeroespacial Coreana (KAI, por sus siglas en inglés). «Lamentamos anunciar que no superamos las restricciones de exportación británicas de los aviones FA-50. Continuaremos tratando de resolver el problema», expresaron los funcionarios del país asiático.

Las autoridades coreanas les dijeron a sus pares argentinos que no podrían suministrarles diez nuevos aviones de combate de dos asientos que les encargaron. Si bien los cazas están basados en el F-16 estadounidense, se encuentran equipados con sistemas británicos en la cabina de mando.

Desde 2016, la Fuerza Aérea Argentina no tiene aviones de combate operativos, tiene fuera de servicio el antiguo Skyhawk que le compró a Estados Unidos. Tampoco el Eagle, la versión de la Industria Aeronáutica de Israel (IAI) del Mirage-5, que adquirió al Estado judío hace 40 años.

Argentina no tiene la disponibilidad económica para comprar aviones de combate occidentales avanzados, como el F-16. Pero lo peor es que no logra superar el embargo de armas impuesto por Gran Bretaña en 1982, después del conflicto armado con el país europeo en las Islas Malvinas en el Atlántico Sur. Eran tiempos que en el país sudamericano gobernaba una dictadura militar.

Una fuerza británica con 127 barcos militares y civiles, incluidos destructores, portaaviones e incluso el buque Queen Elizabeth 2, zarpó desde Portsmouth para combatir en esa guerra. En junio, Argentina se rindió, pero el costo para los británicos fue alto: perdieron 250 hombres, siete barcos, 24 helicópteros y diez aviones de combate. Las pérdidas de los argentinos fueron significativamente mayores: 650 soldados, ocho barcos, un submarino y más de 60 aviones.

En los últimos cinco años se cancelaron tres acuerdos para la compra de aviones de combate para la Fuerza Aérea Argentina. En 2015, un trato de última hora fracasó para la adquisición de 14 cazas israelíes Kfir C-10 reacondicionados por la IAI.

El Kfir es un avión obsoleto hoy en día, pero cuenta con equipamiento avanzado desarrollado por empresas israelíes, como el radar de Elta, el sistema de guerra electrónica de Elbit-Elisra y el armamento de última generación de Rafael, por lo que es capaz de desafiar a muchos nuevos aviones de combate.

Oficialmente, el trato se canceló debido a que Argentina se disponía a celebrar elecciones presidenciales ese año. En la práctica uno de los principales obstáculos fue el asiento eyectable del Kfir, que es fabricado por la compañía británica Martin Baker.

Luego, los argentinos intentaron comprar la misma cantidad de aviones suecos Saab Griffin, de la nueva línea de producción instalada en el vecino Brasil. Pero alrededor del 30% de los componentes de la aeronave son de la empresa británica BAE, por lo que el acuerdo no prosperó

Argentina ahora aceptaría una oferta del gobierno chino para suministrarle los FC-17 que fabrica junto con Pakistán. También puede recibir a los J-10 modernos, que según publicaciones extranjeras se basan en el avión israelí Lavi, cuya producción se canceló y se vendió a los chinos.

Otra posibilidad consiste en que la Industria Aeronáutica de Israel instale un asiento eyectable estadounidense en el Kfir.

Mientras tanto, el ministro de Defensa argentino, Agustín Rossi, manifestó en Twitter que la continuación del embargo británico es «un nuevo ejemplo de orgullo imperialista».
