El escritor holandés-marroquí Abdelkader Benali finalmente no participará como orador en la conmemoración del Holocausto en Ámsterdam.

Tras el repudio de destacados sobrevivientes, el autor que llamó a Gaza “un gueto” y que dijo que se siente incómodo con los judíos renunció a su participación.

Benali escribió que en el día del recuerdo nacional “nos reunimos para conmemorar. La discusión en torno a mis comentarios no debe distraernos de eso. Así que decidí que es mejor que alguien más pronuncie el discurso».

El Comité Nacional de Conmemoración de Holanda lo había nombrado como orador principal. Tras la designación se dio a conocer que, en 2006, durante una conversación con un periodista, afirmó que el sur de Ámsterdam “está lleno de judíos. Y es molesto que haya tantos. Te hace sentir incómodo. Parece Israel. Tantos judíos, simplemente se siente loco».

Por su parte, Benali reconoció que hizo es comentarios, pero que fueron durante la Segunda Guerra del Líbano y que “nos desahogamos. Estaba borracho durante la fiesta. Era humor negro, ironía y mal gusto, que, en retrospectiva, estaban fuera de lugar».

A su vez, quien iba a ser orador en la conmemoración del Holocausto añadió: “Entiendo que los judíos se sientan ofendidos por estos comentarios si no conocen las circunstancias. No quise decir eso. Me distancio de esos comentarios, no fueron hechos literalmente. También tengo amigos judíos y entrevisto a autores judíos».

En un artículo de opinión de 2009, además, escribió que «Gaza es un gueto». También que un hombre judío que llevaba una kipá «a cambio de dinero» le mostró la ciudad israelí de Sderot.

Destacados sobrevivientes del Holocausto de los Países Bajos pidieron a la comunidad judía del país que cortara los lazos con el organismo nacional holandés para conmemorar el genocidio si acogía a Benali como estaba previsto.

Avraham Roet, sobreviviente del Holocausto, dijo: “Por lo general, cuando la gente está borracha, dice lo que piensa. La gente del comité necesita ser reemplazada. Sus acciones y antecedentes muestran que no hay posibilidad de cooperar con ellos en la conmemoración del Holocausto».
