Galit Binder y Yigal Checnick se desempeñan en la unidad médica de las Fuerzas de Defensa de Israel. Contaron la dramática situación con la que se encontraron en los hospitales del país africano tras los estallidos en una base militar de la ciudad de Bata.

El pasado 7 de marzo Guinea Ecuatorial sufrió cuatro explosiones en una base militar ubicada en el barrio de Nkoa Ntoma, en la ciudad de Bata, que dejaron 108 muertos y más de 600 heridos.

Dos días después de las explosiones, Israel envió una delegación que incluyó médicos de cuidados intensivos, pediatras y otros especialistas médicos, le explicaron a Infobae

La soldado Galit Binder, quien lleva 20 años en las FDI como enfermera y especialista en unidades de cuidados intensivos, contó que la primera misión que tuvieron al llegar al país era distribuir a los 67 miembros de la delegación en tres hospitales locales para ayudar a tratar a los cientos de heridos

Lo primero que se encontraron al arribar a Bata fue un gran número de heridos: “Hombres, mujeres, soldados, y lamentablemente muchos niños y bebés”

Es imposible recordarlos a todos, pero todas y cada una de las personas que tratamos se quedarán conmigo”, afirmó el teniente coronel Yigal Checnick, quien se desempeña como oficial médico en las Fuerzas de Defensa de Israel.

“Cuando sonó mi teléfono un martes por la tarde aparentemente normal, me llamaron para que me uniera a las filas de una delegación de las FDI para aliviar la carga médica de Guinea Ecuatorial tras su crisis. Menos de 48 horas después de esta llamada, me encontré con mi uniforme, junto a aproximadamente 60 de mis colegas. Fuimos corriendo hacia el hospital cercano para recibir nuestra información”, continuó su relato.

Lo primero que hizo la delegación israelí fue hacer una evaluación de la situación general de los pacientes. Determinar quiénes requerían atención médica de forma más inmediata.

Checnick reconoció que entre la gran cantidad de heridos se destacaba un “rostro”. “Era una mujer joven, sentada en un rincón de una de las habitaciones, con las piernas hinchadas, y un silencio inquietante. Nos dijeron que llevaba una semana allí sin recibir ningún tratamiento. Intentamos hablar con ella, pero no hablaba español, sino una lengua local que ninguno de nosotros podía entender”.

Lo joven tenía la rodilla derecha rota, y la otra con una fuerte herida. Además, sufría graves infecciones.

“Me aseguré de que la trasladaran a un hospital privado cercano (”Lapaz”), y seguí con mi trabajo. La suerte quiso que al día siguiente visitara Lapaz y la viera de nuevo. Tenía fiebre y había sufrido una grave pérdida de sangre. Yo, con la ayuda del equipo israelí, le di una transfusión de sangre y antibióticos que trajimos de casa. También un tratamiento para salvar sus heridas. Después de la operación, la enviaron a la sala de recuperación”, relató el teniente coronel.

Hoy en día la joven sigue su recuperación, y ya se encuentra fuera de peligro. Pese a ser un militar con gran experiencia en este tipo de casos, Checnick aseguró que esta experiencia lo marcó de por vida. “Aunque he vivido muchas cosas en estos últimos días, tratando a tantas personas y conociendo esta tierra extraña y exótica, hay algo en esa niña que siempre se quedará conmigo”.

La soldado israelí también sostuvo que esta experiencia en Guinea “fue muy diferente” a todas las anteriores en las que participó. Según reconoció, el reciente nacimiento de su primera hija le provocó una emoción diferente a las anteriores a la hora de atender “a niños que han perdido a sus padres, o a padres que han perdido a sus hijos”: “Se siente diferente cuando enfrentas eso como madre primeriza”.

Israel es uno de los principales países que suele enviar equipos médicos y de búsqueda y rescate a naciones afectadas por desastres naturales. También cuando hay catástrofes por accidentes naturales o ataque terroristas.
