Un año después de que el Instituto de Investigación Migal Galilee se comprometiera a entregar la primera vacuna oral COVID-19 del mundo , su empresa afiliada, MigVax, informó que su vacuna funcionó bien en roedores y espera tener la vacuna lista como dosis de refuerzo para las personas en el próximo año.

“Quince meses después de la pandemia, ahora vemos que la lucha para mantener el COVID bajo control es casi tan desafiante como tenerlo bajo control al empezar”. Así lo dijo el profesor Itamar Shalit, experto en enfermedades infecciosas de MigVax.
«Los refuerzos orales como nuestro MigVax-101 serán habilitadores clave que ayudarán a las organizaciones de salud de todo el mundo a pasar del ‘modo de pánico’ a la rutina. Esto es debido a su capacidad para reducir el costo y ampliar el alcance de los programas de vacunación en curso».
La compañía está llamando a su vacuna MigVax-101. A diferencia de las vacunas Pfizer o Moderna que usan ARN mensajero. Esta es una vacuna de subunidad oral, lo que significa que la vacuna presenta el antígeno del coronavirus al sistema inmunológico sin introducir partículas patógenas, enteras o no.
En el ensayo preclínico, la compañía administró la vacuna en un formato de refuerzo a los roedores después de una doble inyección de la proteína pico de coronavirus (S1).
Los resultados mostraron que el uso de MigVax como refuerzo provocó títulos de anticuerpos neutralizantes marcadamente más altos que los roedores que recibieron un refuerzo de placebo oral, explicó un comunicado.
Además, similar a una tercera inyección de refuerzo S1, provocó anticuerpos neutralizantes más efectivos.
«Están buscando usar esto como un refuerzo para aquellos que tomaron la vacuna china, AstraZeneca o Moderna o Pfizer». Se lo dijo a The Jerusalem Post el Dr. Morris Laster, responsable de las inversiones en tecnología médica de OurCrowd . OurCrowd lideró la primera ronda de inversiones.

Según Laster, la vacuna tiene varias ventajas, incluida que, debido a que es una vacuna oral, no requeriría la administración de un profesional médico.
Además, utiliza más de un tipo de proteína, lo que podría hacerla más eficaz contra variantes. La vacuna no requiere condiciones de congelación como las vacunas de ARNm, por lo que podría ser más fácil de almacenar y distribuir.
Finalmente, debido a que no inyecta a las personas material genético o viral, Laster cree que más personas serán propensas a tomarlo.
“Las personas que temen inyectarse deberían tener más facilidad para tragar proteínas”, dijo. «Es como beber yogur».
