Seguramente muchos de los turistas judíos en España habrán visitado el Museo Sefardí de Toledo y aún el Museo de los Judíos de Gerona. Pero puede que muchos desconozcan la existencia de otro en una ciudad al sur de la provincia de Salamanca que tuvo un notable pasado judío recogido por la historia: Béjar.
Su presencia en este antiguo ducado es conocida al menos desde el siglo XIII y hasta la expulsión del Reino de España en 1492.
En las centurias siguientes, el Tribunal de la Inquisición abrió varias causas contra criptojudíos o personas que mantuvieron, o fueron acusadas de mantener, algunas de las tradiciones de la fe de sus ancestros.
Y a partir del XVIII no quedó rastro de ellos en la ciudad. Mucho tiempo después, a mediados del siglo XX, un joven judío de Melilla llamado David Melul se instaló en Béjar. Lo hizo para estudiar en la entonces Escuela de Peritos Industriales, con la intención de obtener la titulación en la rama textil.

Pasó allí varios años, en los que cultivó numerosas amistades y participó de la vida y el crecimiento que en aquellos momentos la ciudad experimentaba. Terminados sus estudios marchó a Cataluña, pero nunca perdió su vinculación con Béjar. Gracias a su patrocinio y mecenazgo el Museo Judío que lleva su nombre abrió sus puertas en el año 2004.
En estos años han creado un espacio de conocimiento y divulgación sobre el judaísmo, la presencia de los judíos en Béjar y el legado de quienes se fueron y de sus descendientes, que aún conservan en sus apellidos el nombre o el gentilicio del lugar del que partieron.
Por expreso deseo de David Melul el museo está regido por un patronato, cuya presidencia honoraria recae en uno de sus hijos, Mario Melul.
Preside el patronato en función de su cargo la alcaldesa de Béjar, en la actualidad María Elena Martín Vázquez.
Actúa como secretario Ignacio Coll Tellechea, periodista, y como tesorero Raúl Hernández Hernández, arqueólogo.

El vicesecretario es Javier Ramón Sánchez Martín, director de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial de Béjar, y el vicetesorero Ricardo Muñoz Solla, profesor del Área de Estudios Hebreos y Arameos de la Universidad de Salamanca.
Completan el patronato en calidad de vocales María Fuencisla García Casar, profesora titular del Área de Estudios Hebreos y Arameos de la Universidad de Salamanca; Óscar Rivadeneyra Prieto, profesor de Dibujo; y Antonio Avilés Amat, profesor jubilado de instituto y director conservador del museo.
También formaron parte del patronato José Luis Rodríguez Antúnez, Jacobo Israel Garzón, Jacques Laredo, Cándido Matías Vicente, Francisco Martín Labajos, Josefina Garzón Paniagua y Carlos Carrete Parrondo.
Los artefactos expuestos sirven de soporte para impregnarse de la historia del lugar, que indica que en Béjar y en las tierras de su antiguo señorío, que ocupa parte de las actuales provincias de Salamanca, Ávila y Cáceres, hubo presencia continuada de judíos al menos desde el final del siglo XII hasta la expulsión.
Está documentada su presencia en algún momento del final de la Edad Media en localidades como Becedas, Gilbuena y Solana (Ávila), Béjar, Candelario, La Cabeza, Fuentes, Navalmoral, Peromingo, Santibáñez y Sorihuela (Salamanca) y Hervás (Cáceres), siendo Béjar la capital del estado feudal que desde mediados del siglo XIII fue administrado por los Zúñiga.
De todas ellas solo Béjar y Hervás están documentadas como aljamas. Por lo tanto, dotadas de los servicios e instituciones que permitían a los judíos la completa vivencia de su fe. La sinagoga, escuela, baños rituales, carnicería, horno, hospital y cementerio, entre otros.

El Fuero de Béjar recoge las normas de convivencia de los nuevos moradores de la villa, repoblada en buena parte por abulenses.
Allí se recoge que los judíos de Béjar pueden jurar por la Torá en los juicios que mantuvieran con la población cristiana. Como así también disponer de juez propio que ejercía junto con el cristiano en los pleitos que atañeran a personas de ambas creencias, y señalaba los viernes y los domingos como los días establecidos para que pudieran usar los baños públicos.
No existe constancia de la presencia en Béjar de una cerca o muro que separara los barrios judíos de los cristianos. Al contrario de lo que señalaba la legislación castellana, y por la documentación investigada pueden consignarse viviendas de familias judías en el entorno del palacio ducal y de las iglesias de Santa María, San Gil y San Juan.
Las persecuciones y sucesos violentos de 1391 en varias localidades del Sur de España motivó un éxodo de judíos hacia la Meseta. Con el consiguiente aumento de la comunidad hebrea en lugares como Béjar y Hervás.
Precisamente con motivo de la llegada de más judíos y su instalación en una nueva zona de la villa podría haber sido el origen del todavía conocido como Barrio Nuevo, en el que diversos documentos de compra venta posteriores señalan la presencia de población hebrea.
De esos tres siglos han llegado hasta nosotros el nombre de varios de aquellos judíos bejaranos, como los del médico Rabí Ça; el zapatero Samuel de la Tetilla; Isaque Albuer, de profesión ganadero. Incluso recaudadores de impuestos como Simuel de Medina.
Pero los judíos más singulares de la aljama bejarana son otros dos de los que nos queda algo más que el nombre y ocupación.
A finales del XIV vio la luz en Béjar Raby Hayyim ibn Mussa. Su prolífica actividad le llevó a practicar la Medicina. Traductor, poeta y ferviente defensor de su fe en algunas de las disputas apologéticas del momento.

Algunos de sus argumentos se recogieron en su libro Maguén va-Romav (La lanza y el escudo). Murió en 1460. Antes que él habitó en Béjar otra judía cuyo testimonio nos ha llegado inscrito en la piedra.
Doña Fadueña era el nombre de una hebrea bejarana que podría haber vivido entre los siglos XII y XIII y cuya lápida sepulcral fue localizada en buen estado durante unas obras en Béjar en el año 1879.
La losa de granito presenta una curiosa inscripción en caracteres dobles cuya leyenda ha sido traducida como “Doña Fadueña, descanse en gloria, gloriosa princesa en lo interior”.
Poco antes del decreto de expulsión nacería también en Béjar Francés de Zúñiga, importante personaje durante el reinado de Carlos V, a cuya Corte perteneció, y autor de una crónica burlesca de notable calidad.
En sus escritos el propio Don Francés alude a su posible condición de converso o descendiente de judíos.
Tras la expulsión, y al menos durante los siguientes dos siglos, el Tribunal de la Inquisición practicó numerosas pesquisas y requerimientos en Béjar y su alfoz para tratar de descubrir a los criptojudíos que, tras la conversión forzosa, mantenían ritos y costumbres de su antigua fe.
Aún en el 1665 el arcipreste de la iglesia de San Juan, Jerónimo González de Lucio, manifestaba en el Sínodo de Plasencia que “los cristianos viejos en Béjar no son fáciles de hallar”.
Muchos de los que se fueron en 1492 adoptaron el gentilicio de lugar que les vio nacer. Así surgieron las sagas de Béjar, Behar, Bejarano, Becerano y Bicerano. También hay otras derivaciones del topónimo original que se repartieron, primero por otros países de Europa, el Norte de África y la actual Turquía, y posteriormente en América.
Muchos de ellos viajan a Béjar cada año para rencontrarse con la tierra que da origen a su nombre y visitan el museo.
