Científicos de la Universidad de Tel Aviv, en Israel, descubrieron que las células del pulmón «se preparan» para alojar metástasis del cáncer de mama, un proceso cuyo estudio podría ayudar a prevenir el desarrollo de esta enfermedad

El estudio, dirigido por la profesora Neta Erez, del Departamento de Patología de la Facultad de Medicina de la universidad israelí, descubrió los cambios en el tejido pulmonar sano, que indican preparación para recibir metástasis.

Los investigadores afirmaron que estos cambios en los tejidos son una señal temprana del posible desarrollo de células cancerosas diseminadas, las metástasis.

En muchos tipos de cánceres, entre ellos el de mama, no siempre los pacientes mueran a causa del tumor primario. Muchas veces, la principal causa de mortalidad son las metástasis, que llegan a los órganos esenciales y allí proliferan.

Las metástasis pueden aparecer después de varios años. Incluso en pacientes que se han sometido a todos los tratamientos ofrecidos, incluida la extirpación quirúrgica del tumor primario, quimioterapia o radiación.

La ciencia israelí habría descubierto un tratamiento para el linfedema

Desde la universidad recordaron que los métodos que se utilizan hoy para el seguimiento localizan las metástasis solo cuando son bastante grandes. Recién cuando la enfermedad se encuentra en una etapa avanzada y la medicina no ofrece soluciones curativas.

Frente a este problema, el equipo de la profesora Erez investigó el período entre la recuperación aparente y la aparición de metástasis. Con el objetivo de comprender el proceso metastásico e identificarlo en etapas tempranas.

Su investigación -que se enfocó en células del tejido conectivo conocidas como fibroblastos- reveló que los órganos donde está previsto que lleguen las metástasis «preparan el área» para la recepción y producen un «ambiente amable» para ellas, incluso mucho antes de que aparezcan.

«En una situación normal, los fibroblastos desempeñan un papel central en la curación de heridas y lesiones en los pulmones. Estudios recientes revelaron que el cáncer logra ‘reclutarlos’ y hacer que produzcan un entorno de apoyo» para la aparición de las metástasis, indicó Erez.

La profesora indicó que a través de la investigación, llevada a cabo con técnicas de secuenciación de genes de ratones en un modelo de metástasis de cáncer de mama, «logramos caracterizar los procesos que ocurren en el tejido pulmonar en preparación para la recepción de metástasis».
