Un hombre de Ohio que planeó un ataque a una sinagoga fue sentenciado a 20 años de prisión, según el Departamento de Justicia.

Damon Joseph, también conocido como Abdullah Ali Yusuf, de Holanda, se declaró culpable en mayo de 2021 de intentar brindar apoyo material al grupo terrorista Estado Islámico e intentar cometer un crimen de odio.

Joseph llamó la atención de las fuerzas del orden público en 2018 al publicar fotografías de armas y varios mensajes en apoyo de ISIS en sus redes sociales.

Además, se supo que planeaba llevar a cabo el ataque en una sinagoga de Toledo, donde esperaba causar un gran número de víctimas seleccionando un momento en el que estarían presentes varias personas.

“El acusado planeó causar un daño significativo a los miembros de la comunidad judía de Toledo, Ohio» con un ataque a la sinagoga, dijo Kristen Clarke, del Departamento de Justicia. “Esta frase debería enviar un mensaje contundente de que aquellos que atacan a las personas con violencia debido a su religión serán responsables. La División de Derechos Civiles del Departamento de Justicia continuará investigando y procesando enérgicamente a las personas que utilizan la violencia para atacar a nuestras comunidades religiosas”, concluyó.

Junto con la sentencia de prisión, Joseph tendrá un período de libertad supervisada de por vida por intentar apoyar a ISIS mediante ataques violentos.

A partir de septiembre de 2018, el hombre de 23 años habló con varios agentes encubiertos del FBI donde dijo que apoyaba a ISIS. Semanas después, Joseph le dijo a un agente encubierto que quería participar en un ataque en nombre del grupo terrorista.

En diciembre se reunió con un agente encubierto del FBI y discutió la posibilidad de realizar un tiroteo masivo en una sinagoga. Joseph escribió notas sobre el deseo de AR15 y AK47, pistolas Glock y munición y se las dio al agente.

Más tarde, el agente encubierto le dijo al terrorista que compró los rifles para el ataque. Los dos se conocieron el 7 de diciembre, donde Joseph tomó una bolsa de lona negra que contenía los dos rifles; los agentes del orden los hicieron inoperables para que no hubiera ningún peligro para el público.
