Los israelíes y argentinos que murieron en el atentado a las Torres Gemelas

Entre la cifra de víctimas mortales tras el atentado a las Torres Gemelas (11 de septiembre de 2001), que fueron más de 3000, se encuentran cinco israelíes y cinco argentinos. Ellos son: Daniel Lewin, Alona Avraham, Leon Lebor, Hagai Shefi y Shai Levinhar, los israelíes. Por su parte, Mario Santoro, Sergio Villanueva, Gabriela Waissman, Pedro Grehan y Guillermo Chalcoff, los argentinos. Estas son sus historias

Se estima que Lewin, matemático y emprendedor israelí-norteamericano de 31 años, fue la primera víctima mortal de los ataques del 11 de septiembre. Habría sido apuñalado hasta la muerte en un enfrentamiento suyo contra los terroristas en el vuelo 11 de American Airlines. Mohamed Atta, el terrorista que tomó el mando de dicha aeronave, la estrelló contra la Torre Norte del World Trade Center.

Avraham, de 30 años, era una de los pasajeros en el vuelo 175 de United Airlines, la aeronave impactada contra la Torre Sur del World Trade Center. Sus restos, identificados años después del ataque, fueron enterrados en Israel en el año 2008.

Levinhar, de 29 años, trabajaba como empleado de la empresa de servicios financieros Cantor-Fitzgerald en el piso 103 de la Torre Norte del World Trade Center.

Shefi, de 34 años, fundador y director ejecutivo de la compañía GoldTier Technologies, sostenía una junta en el piso 106 de la Torre Norte. Tras el impacto y sin posibilidad de descender de su ubicación, Shefi logró aún comunicarse con su esposa antes del derrumbe del edificio. Sus restos fueron enterrados en Nueva Jersey.

Lebor, la víctima israelí de más edad con 51 años y sordo de nacimiento, era intendente en una de las dos Torres al momento de los ataques.

Mario Santoro era un rosarino que vivía en Nueva York desde muy pequeño junto a sus padres Alberto y María y que había logrado formar una familia junto a su pareja estadounidense Leonor y su hija Sofía, que en el 2001 tenía apenas dos años.

El día del atentado, Santoro se encontraba de licencia. Al escuchar el estruendo y al ver desde el balcón de su casa una de las dos torres ardiendo, el joven que ejercía como paramédico en la ciudad estadounidense le comunicó a su mujer que debía acudir al lugar: «Voy para allá. Me van a necesitar».

Santoro se comunicó con Keith Farben, su compañero de ambulancia, y le pidió que lo esperara en el ingreso a una de las torres. Fue lo último que se supo de él.

Otro argentino que también perdió la vida mientras asistía a terceros fue Sergio Villanueva, un bombero nacido en Bahía Blanca y quien murió con apenas 33 años.

Gabriela Waisman, de 33 años, fue la primera argentina identificada en la lista de víctimas mortales. Nació en el barrio porteño de Caballito pero se mudó con su familia a Nueva York a los seis años.

Si bien se recibió como psicóloga, desarrolló su carrera profesional en una empresa de software llamada Sybase. Además, y al cabo de unos años, logró ascender al puesto de gerenta de la compañía.

Ella no trabajaba en los edificios del World Trade Center, su oficina se ubicaba a unas nueve cuadras de allí. Sin embargo, esa mañana fatídica se encontraba en el piso 106 de una de las torres durante un «trade show» de su empresa.

Pedro Grehan nació en 1965 en San Isidro. En 1997, sin trabajo, casado y con tres hijos, decidió irse a probar suerte a Nueva York. Al cabo de unos años se consolidó como analista financiero de la empresa Cantor Fitzgerald y trabajaba el día a día dentro de las torres.

Chalcoff, un empresario de 41 años que poco antes del atentado recibió la ciudadanía estadounidense, por lo que había sido registrado como una víctima local.
