Eilat, el refugio paradisíaco de los turistas que escapan del terror. Por Ana Garralda

Eilat, en el extremo más al sur de Israel se ha convertido en el último refugio occidental del golfo de Aqaba. Locales y extranjeros ya no visitan los enclaves turísticos egipcios, mucho más baratos, pero hoy cerrados tras los últimos atentados terroristas en la Península del Sinaí.

Janet Schwartz, fotógrafa de origen neoyorquino aunque afincada en México durante más de tres décadas, reside en Eilat desde hace un par de años. Tras estar casada durante veinte con un porteño de «izquierdas y hippie», según cuenta -y dos hijos en común-, decidió hacer Aliyá (inmigrar como judía a Israel) e instalarse a orillas del Mar Rojo.

“Este lugares muy especial para los judíos porque según la Biblia fue precisamente aquí donde Dios hizo el milagro y abrió el mar para que pudieran salir de Egipto y huir de la esclavitud de los egipcios», comenta desde la orilla de la Playa de Coral, al sur de Eilat y a solo 1 kilómetro de la frontera con Egipto.

“Lo que más me gusta es salir a bucear y hacer fotos. Aquí tenemos uno de los arrecifes de coral más bonitos del mundo», explica antes de agarrar una cámara herméticamente cerrada y, ayudada por una máscara y unas aletas, sumergirse en estas aguas claras, hogar de 1200 especies de peces y 250 de corales, según los datos facilitados por el Ministerio de Turismo israelí.

Esta historiadora del arte, experta en arte precolombino y después fotógrafa para publicaciones como el New York Times, cuenta que Eilat es puerto franco (libre de impuestos) y «donde todo está organizado para que llegue turismo de todo el mundo. Vemos gente de Alemania, de los países Bálticos, de Asia o de Estados Unidos”, comenta Schwartz a pocos metros de una pareja ucraniana que se encuentra de vacaciones con su hijo por las festividades de la Semana Santa ortodoxa, que este año ha coincido con la Pascua Judía.

“Este invierno ha sido maravilloso porque hemos tenido un aumento del 40% de ocupación respecto del invierno pasado”, asegura Shabtai Shay, director de la Asociación de Hoteleros de Eilat desde uno de los carísimos hoteles de la zona del centro, dirigidos a un turismo más adinerado y selecto.

“Ahora la mayoría de los turistas aterrizan en vuelos directos de bajo costo fletados desde Europa, bien desde Polonia, Hungría, Lituania, Ucrania y también desde Rusia, donde poco a poco vuelve el interés por el Mar Rojo», agrega este israelí en relación al derribo hace un año del aparato de la aerolínea Metrojet que explotó mientras sobrevolaba el Sinaí con 220 turistas a bordo.

Este atentado terrorista y la ofensiva que el Ejército egipcio lleva a cabo contra el ISIS (Daesh, cuya filial local es conocida como Ansar Beit Al Maqdis) han hecho que los antaño llenos –especialmente durante la Pascua judía en que muchos israelíes iban al Sinaí– enclaves turísticos de Sharm el Sheij, Nuweiba y Dahab, hoy en día estén prácticamente vacíos.

​Únicamente la ciudad fronteriza de Taba, situada a tres kilómetros de Eilat, sigue atrayendo a algunos israelíes que cruzan para jugar en el casino (dado que el juego está prohibido en Israel al ser contrario a la ley judía o Halajá).

“Mire, yo nací en Eilat y solía ir al Sinaí de vacaciones, pero ya no lo hago porque se ha convertido en un lugar muy peligroso”, afirma Kohava Amor, que ha vuelto a su ciudad natal para celebrar elPessaj(la Pascua judía) junto a su familia.

“Siempre ha sido un lugar de reunión familiar para celebrar nuestras festividades religiosas, pero también para muchos extranjeros que vienen aquí por el clima, el buceo, el acuario submarino y el observatorio de ciencias del mar”, añade su marido.

Sin embargo otra viandante muestra su preocupación porque la diferencia de precios respecto de la vecina Aqaba hace que los turistas aterricen en el aeropuerto de Eilat pero luego crucen a Jordania para pasar sus vacaciones.

Bien es cierto que de momento el Daesh ha sido incapaz de radicarse en el país vecino, pero el riesgo de atentados de corte islamista radical no puede descartarse como en casi ninguna esquina del Golfo de Aqaba.

Una inestabilidad que también lastra el sector turístico de Eilat. Según datos facilitados por la Asociación Hotelera, la ciudad ha perdido en 5 años otro 40% de ocupación en sus hoteles, lo que ha llevado a esta entidad a subvencionar con un 25% (el otro 75% lo paga el Ministerio de Turismo israelí) a distintas aerolíneas aéreas europeas para que continúen volando al extremo sur de Israel aun cuando no lleven suficientes pasajeros a bordo, lo que en situación normal llevaría a la suspensión de los vuelos.

Ejemplo paradigmático de cómo Eilat se convierte en lugar de reunión es la familia Teitelbaum-Bloomberg, natural de la Argentina. Shimon e Hilda, que emigraron a Israel hace más de 40 años -la inmigración argentina en Israel ha sido, y es actualmente, la corriente migratoria más numerosa y significativa proveniente de América Latina-, llegan a la reserva de coral que se encuentra junto a la frontera con Egipto con Susana, hermana de ella, que ha venido de visita desde Buenos Aires, y con su nieto Alón. “En realidad somos tres generaciones, pero la intermedia no está aquí pues tuvieron que ir al trabajo”, señala Shimon, en relación a sus hijos y sus respectivas parejas.

Hace cuatro décadas Shimon, -argentino de origen ruso- e Hilda -de familia polaca- se asentaron en Arad, una pequeña ciudad situada en la confluencia entre el desierto de Judea y el del Neguev, conocida hoy quizá por ser el lugar de residencia del escritor Amos Oz, considerado como el autor contemporáneo en lengua hebrea más internacional de Israel y cuyas obras están traducidas a medio centenar de idiomas.

“Hemos venido para pasar unos días con Susana que ha venido de Argentina y para disfrutar del mar”, indica Shimon. “Estamos en un clima subtropical, lo que hace que haya tantos corales. Sin embargo están de retirada por la contaminación del turismo y la construcción de tantos hoteles que los están dañando. Ahora están de retirada”, agrega este septuagenario buceador.

“Además del placer que supone venir desde Argentina a Israel a ver a mi familia, lo que más aprecio de estar a este lado del Mar Rojo es la sensación de seguridad”, dice Susana, mientras el pequeño Alon HaGadol (Alón, el grande) como le llama su abuela, marcha a la orilla con Shimon, quien le habla de la flora y la fauna del lugar. “Los israelíes antes iban aquí al lado, al Sinaí”, cuenta Hilda, “pero con la situación ahora es imposible, allí, y hoy casi que en cualquier parte”, añade Teitelbaum.
