Diego Schwartzman se adjudicó este domingo en Buenos Aires el Abierto de Argentina al derrotar con comodidad a su compatriota Francisco Cerúndolo por 6-1 y 6-2.
La final del torneo de tenis disputado en la tierra batida del Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis no tuvo equivalencias.
El Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club parecía una cancha de fútbol. Si bien los protocolos establecidos no permitían el ingreso de más de 300 espectadores diarios, el número no significó un problema para que el ambiente se transformara en puros cánticos. Y, en medio de ese contexto folclórico, Diego Schwartzman (9°) superó a Francisco Cerúndolo (137°) por 6-1 y 6-2 en la final del Argentina Open.
«Impresionante el clima, terminé llorando el año pasado y ahora también un poco, ja. Es duro cuando perdés en casa, la semana pasada parecía la peor persona del país. Hoy jugué muy bien, el ambiente era muy lindo», comentó el Peque tras la consagración y luego admitió que «es el título más lindo» de su carrera porque «disfruto mucho jugar acá».
Si bien el resultado parece categórico, empíricamente el encuentro fue mucho más parejo. Claro, el tenista de 28 años sacó a relucir toda su experiencia en los momentos decisivos (los 30-30, las ventajas), mientras que a Cerúndolo le cayó toda la presión encima de golpe. De hecho, solía lastimar a su rival en los primeros puntos de cada game, pero cuando todo se apretaba ahí su derecha tan característica o los drop shots terminaban fuera de los límites de la cancha o estrellados en la red.

Más allá de los errores del joven de 22 años, la realidad es que el nivel de Diego Schwartzman en Buenos Aires fue superlativo. Desde el calentamiento hasta el cierre. Y demostró su condición de top 10. Ojo, sí tuvo algunos baches -lógicos- (cuando perdió su saque en el quinto game del segundo set), pero no le generaron ningún tipo de inconvenientes. Tanto es así que el título pareció nunca haber estado en riesgo y sólo era cuestión del paso del tiempo para llegar al resultado necesario y, de ese modo, concretar el triunfo.

El Peque pudo darse el gran gusto de su carrera. Es cierto que alcanzó semifinales de Roland Garros, los cuartos del Abierto de Australia y del US Open y la final del Masters 1000 de Roma. También que derrotó a Rafael Nadal y a Dominic Thiem en polvo de ladrillo. Sin embargo, consagrarse en su casa era algo que anhelaba. Lo deseaba tanto que hasta supo jugar algunas rondas con un dolor intenso en la rodilla. Y después de tanto buscarlo lo consiguió junto a su gente en la tribuna.
Cuarto título en la carrera de Schwartzman (Estambul 2016, Río de Janeiro 2018 y Los Cabos 2019) que suma 100 puntos más para el ranking (reemplaza a la final de 2019 cuando había caído con Cecchinato) y se afirma en la novena posición. Un campeón con todas las letras, que terminó con una maldición que databa de 2008. Ahora sí el Argentina Open puede congraciarse de volver a contar con un ganador nacional.
