Israel inicia vacunación contra COVID-19 en menores de 12 a 15 años

Israel comenzó a vacunar a menores de 12 a 15 años contra COVID-19, tras la publicación de un prometedor estudio que demuestra que la vacuna no es tan perjudicial como se pensaba inicialmente para jóvenes varones, informó Enlace Judío.

Con el 63,03% de su población vacunada con al menos una dosis contra el COVID-19 y con el 59,35% completamente inoculada, según cifras del monitor de Our World in Data, Israel avanza en su campaña de vacunación, tras sumar a la franja etaria más joven.

El domingo, cientos de niños de entre 12 y 15 años recibieron sus primeras dosis de vacunas contra el coronavirus, dado que comenzó el plan de vacunación para sus grupos de edad en Israel, país que acumula unos 839.566 contagios y 6418 fallecidos por COVID-19 desde el inicio de la pandemia, según cifras de Johns Hopkins University & Medicine Coronavirus Resource Center.

El Ministerio de Salud anunció la campaña de vacunación para menores el pasado miércoles, luego de que un estudio sobre la posible relación entre la vacuna y la inflamación del corazón en varones jóvenes, indicara que los riesgos de la miocarditis son menores en comparación con los de COVID-19.

Según las conclusiones del estudio, la segunda dosis de la vacuna contra COVID-19 se relacionó con casos de miocarditis en hombres de 16 a 30 años, y el riesgo disminuye con la edad. La mayoría de los casos relacionados con la vacuna fueron leves y duraron solo unos días.

Se permitirá la vacunación inmediata de menores con enfermedades subyacentes, aquellos cuyos familiares corren un mayor riesgo de contraer el coronavirus, y jóvenes que viajarán al extranjero.

El comisionado del gobierno para COVID-19, profesor Najman Ash dijo a la emisora de radio israelí 103 FM que, aunque la vacuna puede causar miocarditis, el fenómeno es raro.

“En las edades de 16 a 19 años, que es nuestro grupo de referencia, la proporción es de una entre 6,000 casos y la enfermedad tiende a ser leve y breve”, aseguró Ash.

“Es más frecuente en varones. No podemos explicarlo realmente, debe tener una explicación biológica, quizá una influencia genética, pero no lo sabemos con certeza”, agregó.

Por su parte, el profesor Zahi Grossman, presidente de la Asociación de Pediatría de Israel, sostuvo que debido a las bajas tasas de infección, la vacunación de menores no es urgente.

“No estamos en una situación de epidemia galopante. La tasa de infección es casi nula. Es por eso que discusión fue tan larga. Lo mejor es poner la vacuna a disposición de quien la quiera”, sugirió.

Grossman estimó que el Ministerio de Salud podría cambiar su política en septiembre, al inicio del nuevo año escolar en función del índice de infección y de la evolución de la vacuna.

Según los datos de la dependencia sanitaria, en Israel se registraron 275 casos de miocarditis entre diciembre de 2020 y mayo de 2021.

La mayoría de los pacientes no pasaron más de cuatro días en el hospital y el 95 por ciento de los casos se clasificaron como leves.

El estudio reveló que “existe una relación probable entre la segunda dosis (de la vacuna de Pfizer) y la aparición de miocarditis entre hombres de 16 a 30 años”, según un comunicado.

Dicha relación se observó más entre varones de 16 a 19 años que en otros grupos de edad.

Pfizer dijo en un comunicado que está al tanto de las observaciones israelíes sobre la miocarditis, y señaló que no se ha establecido ningún nexo causal con su vacuna.

La compañía especificó que los efectos colaterales se revisan minuciosamente y Pfizer se reúne regularmente con representantes del Departamento de Seguridad de las Vacunas del Ministerio de Salud de Israel para revisar los datos.
