Israel derrotó el sábado por la noche a Austria por 5-2 en un partido de clasificación para el Mundial de fútbol de Qatar 2022.

El resultado deja a Israel como segundo de grupo tras cinco partidos disputados. El martes se enfrentará al líder del Grupo F, Dinamarca. Dinamarca ha ganado sus cinco partidos de clasificación hasta la fecha.

“Es una sensación increíble, fue un gran partido para todo el equipo”, dijo el delantero Eran Zahavi, según el Canal 12. “Tenemos un partido importante contra Dinamarca el martes. Es difícil bajar a la tierra después de un partido así, fue un gran partido”.

Zahavi marcó dos goles, tres días después de su triplete contra las Islas Feroe. Austria remontó un 3-2 desde el 3-0 antes de que Shon Weissman y Zahavi volvieran a estirar la ventaja de Israel.

El resultado fue aplaudido por el Primer Ministro Naftali Bennett, que dijo que “no sólo era un logro tremendo, sino también uno de los mejores partidos que hemos tenido”.

La ministra de Cultura, Chili Tropper, elogió al equipo por un partido “excelente”. “Vamos, vamos Israel”, dijo.

El miércoles por la noche, un triplete de Zahavi ayudó a Israel a superar a las Islas Feroe por 4-0. Zahavi, que juega en el PSV Eindhoven holandés, abrió el marcador en el minuto 12 y marcó un segundo gol justo antes del descanso.  Y en el segundo minuto del tiempo de descuento, el delantero consiguió su triplete.

Israel no se clasifica para el Mundial desde México 1970. La victoria ante Austria lo ubicó en el segundo puesto del Grupo F, con 10 puntos en cinco partidos, por detrás de Dinamarca, con 15, y por delante de Escocia (8), Austria (7), Islas Feroe (1) y Moldavia (1)

El primer puesto clasifica al mundial y el segundo va a un repechaje por otro lugar en Qatar 2022.
