Hoy se cumplen 44 años del día que la ex primer ministra de Israel Golda Meir murió a la edad de ochenta años. Con ella desapareció la última de las grandes figuras del Movimiento Laborista israelí que levantaron los cimientos y edificaron el Estado de Israel.

Diputada, ministra y primer ministra, su personalidad imprimió todo un carácter a la escena política de su país. «Es el único hombre de mi Gobierno», dijo de ella el primer ministro, David Ben Gurión.

Las radios israelíes interrumpieron sus emisiones, para anunciar la muerte de Golda Meir en el hospital Hadassah, de Jerusalén.

Su fallecimiento se produjo tras una larga y penosa enfermedad. Su estado de salud, ya precario a raíz de una agravación del mal que la aquejaba, se vio bruscamente deteriorada a consecuencia de un ataque de ictericia.

Miembro de un kibutz en 1921, líder sindicalista en el veintiocho, dirigente político en 1936. Ocupó el cargo de primer embajador de Israel en la URSS en 1949.

En 1956 se convirtió en ministra de Asuntos Exteriores, en secretaria general del Movimiento Laborista en 1966 y en primer ministra en 1969.

Esta mujer apasionada, esposa, madre y abuela, de la que Ben Gurión afirmó que «era el único hombre de su Gobierno». Supo imprimir la marca de una personalidad sin igual a una época excepcional para Israel.

Nació en Ucrania en 1898 con el nombre de Goldie Mabovich. Pasó a llamarse Goldie Myerson por su matrimonio en Estados Unidos. Emigró junto a su familia en 1906, huyendo de los progroms antijudíos de la Rusia zarista.

Su nombre definitivo de Golda Meir lo adoptó cuando Ben Gurión la envió de embajadora a Moscú. «Golda», como la llamaban familiarmente los israelíes, se convirtió en el símbolo de una generación de soñadores y colonizadores. De idealistas y políticos realistas, que combatió a brazo partido. Primero por un sionismo militante, luego por un Estado hebreo en lucha por su supervivencia física, política y económica.

Por otra parte, los israelíes le tributaron un cariño que pocos dirigentes de Israel han tenido. Además, de ella emanaba una fuerza, una seguridad que despertaba confianza. «Golda sabe lo que hace», «uno se puede fiar de ella», decían los israelíes. Incluso en medio del desastre de la guerra de 1973, que no afectó a su prestigio. Entonces se pidió la cabeza de Dayan, o de este o aquel general, pero Golda quedó por encima de todo.

La fascinación que ejercía era sorprendente. No poseía el espiritu visionario de Ben Gurión ni la cultura política de Moshe Sharet. Ni siquiera la capacidad de análisis de Yitzak Rabin.
