Una startup israelí desarrolló un sistema capaz de predecir ataques epilépticos una hora antes de que ocurran, ayudando a quienes los padecen a contener síntomas tomando rápidamente sus medicamentos.
La empresa es NeuroHelp, con sede en Beer Sheva, en el sur del país. Se fundó hace tres años cuando el profesor Oren Shriki, del Departamento de Ciencias Cognitivas y Cerebrales de la Universidad Ben-Gurion del Negev, se asoció con Nadav Karni.
Su objetivo primario era encontrar una manera de potencialmente detectar incluso la convulsión más pequeña en los pacientes con epilepsia, y ahora tienen a punto su nuevo sistema.
Shriki arrancó con la hipótesis de que todas las personas, incluso aquellos que no sufren este problema, se encuentran al borde de un episodio de epilepsia, y buscó una manera de detectar lo llamó el «punto de transición» después del cual el ataque es inevitable.
Detectando fluctuaciones en la actividad cerebral
Por ese camino, NeuroHelp creó un software basado en inteligencia artificial que puede ayudar a detectar convulsiones mediante pruebas de electroencefalografía (EEG), que miden la actividad eléctrica en el cerebro con pequeños discos metálicos en el cuero cabelludo.
El software puede detectar ciertas fluctuaciones mensurables en la actividad cerebral que indican que se está produciendo una convulsión.
Cuando se cruza el «punto de transición», explicó el profesor israelí al portal NoCamels, se puede terminar «teniendo una alucinación, que es un tipo de actividad incontrolada en el cerebro».
«O ataques epilépticos, que son algo similares pero implican una actividad más sincrónica de las redes neuronales», añadió.
La epilepsia es un trastorno cerebral que hace que las personas tengan convulsiones recurrentes, que ocurren cuando grupos de células nerviosas del cerebro envían señales «erróneas».
Los afectados pueden pueden tener sensaciones extrañas o comportarse de una manera rara, sufrir espasmos musculares violentos o hasta perder el conocimiento.
NoCamels señaló que, una vez que el algoritmo desarrollado por Shriki y Karni pudo detectar una convulsión mediante el monitoreo de ondas cerebrales, NeuroHelp comenzó a trabajar en una forma de predecir los ataques epilépticos.
Inteligencia artificial y algoritmos
Para hacerlo, tomaron toda la actividad cerebral y la analizaron a través del algoritmo para identificar qué parte se activa antes de un ataque epiléptico. Con esa información, el sistema es capaz de predecir un episodio hasta una hora antes, aseguraron los emprendedores.
Cada pocos segundos, la aplicación obtiene datos de las pruebas de EEG, que indican al sistema de inteligencia artificial qué tan cerca está el «punto de transición» en el paciente. Eso, apuntaron, le muestra al usuario si pronto podría ocurrir un episodio de epilepsia.
Actualmente, precisó NoCamels, la plataforma utiliza un escáner EEG que puede registrar y monitorear la actividad del cerebro durante la noche a través de una aplicación móvil, pero está trabajando en un dispositivo más compacto que se puede usar durante el día.
