La comunidad judía de Tierra del Fuego, la más austral del mundo, ya es una realidad

Hace dos meses, y en plena pandemia, se creó la comunidad judía más joven de la Argentina y la más austral del mundo: la de Tierra del Fuego. La componen más de 50 familias residentes en Ushuaia, Tolhuin y Rio Grande que ya están en contacto con instituciones centrales.

Desde OSFA-WIZO anuncian que, de su red de regionales, es la más austral del mundo. También con AMIA y a través de Vaad Hakehilot se comunicaron con otras comunidades patagónicas.

Vis á Vis dialogó con autoridades de la Asociación Comunidad Colectividad Judia de Tierra del Fuego Antártida e Islas del Atlántico Sur: Mónica Stadlin, su presidenta; Liliana Tabera, su secretaria; y Geraldine Velásquez Leiva, la tesorera. Además, integran la comisión directiva Yésica Locker, Fanny Rudistein, Gustavo Kogan, Marcos Arcusin, Nadia Melamedoff y Marcelo Bertini; además de Zulema Lavin y Lidia Barreiro Samban como miembros honorarios.

  • ¿Cómo está compuesta la comunidad de Tierra del Fuego?

MS: La comunidad judía de Tierra del Fuego está compuesta por familias residentes en Ushuaia, Tolhuin y Rio Grande. Entre ellas, hoy contamos con la familia de Victor Elsztein, nieto del antiguo poblador Julio Elsztein, pionero de la colectividad que llegó a Ushuaia en 1927.

También hubo otras familias que con el correr de los años se asentaron en Ushuaia y en Rio Grande. En los años 80 llegaron a tierras fueguinas en búsqueda de nuevas oportunidades, entre ellos los Basel, los Locker, Echt, por Ushuaia. Por Rio Grande las familias Pindek y Zilberberg, entre otros. En la actualidad hay muchas más familias. Durante el 2019 nos recorrimos la provincia para conocerlos.

  •  ¿Cuánta gente integra la comunidad?

MS: Por el momento conocemos de la existencia de mas de 40 familias en Ushuaia, diez familias en Rio Grande y tres familias en Tolhuin.

A partir del momento que asumimos hace dos meses cómo Asociación Comunidad Colectividad Judía de Tierra del Fuego Antártida e Islas del Atlántico Sur nos hemos propuesto hacer un relevamiento de datos para conocer cuantas familias han residido desde la década del ’20 hasta ahora.

  • ¿Se conocen todas las familias?

MS: Algunas familias se conocían y eran de los más antiguos de la región antes de la creación de la Provincia de Tierra del Fuego el 1 de Junio de 1991. Otras no y nos separaban entre ciudades más de 212 kilómetros. Era muy difícil que se conocieran si no existía un nexo que los uniera.

Cuando llegamos con mi familia en 2016 nos preguntábamos si había comunidad judía; nadie sabía respondernos. Hasta que un día, caminando por las playas de la bahía, divisamos en la costa un gran Maguen David en el Cementerio Municipal Parque del Mar, el cual nos llamó mucho la atención. Llegamos a la conclusión que había o hubo vida judía en Ushuaia.

Comenzamos a averiguar y a consultar. Tuvimos la suerte de que una compañera mía llamada Lara (del terciario) nos comentara que conocía a una familia de apellido Basel que tenía un grupo de Whatsapp, lo cual nos entusiasmó y accedimos pero el encuentro no surgió.

GVL: Pasó un tiempo y en ocasión de un evento gastronómico en el día del 134° cumpleaños de nuestra ciudad capital Ushuaia presentamos platos de la cocina judía. Ese día nos sorprendimos gratamente por la repercusión en las redes. Fue muy emocionante la aparición de familias o personas solas buscando los knishes y pletzalej que preparamos para esa ocasión. Percibimos que, más allá de ofrecer a la comunidad fueguina nuestra cocina judía, nos daba la oportunidad de conocer a otras familias y reencontrarnos con las historias de la región. Así fue como comenzamos a intentar construir una comunidad.

  •  ¿Se van a juntar con más filiales del sur? ¿Tuvieron charlas?

MS: En el último año, con la situación de la pandemia, fuimos vinculándonos a través del Vaad Hakehilot con otras comunidades patagónicas y hasta nos invitaron a integrar una red de contactos para compartir vivencias y la cultura de cada una de nuestras regiones. Seguimos asombrados de la cantidad de pequeñas comunidades del interior en la cual están ávidos de mantener encendida la llama del judaísmo.

  • ¿Qué actividades piensan realizar?

MS: Todo lo que sea para el enriquecimiento de nuestra cultura, por sobre todo educación y conciencia judía. Tenemos muchas ideas en mente, sólo basta llevarlo a la práctica.

Actividades culturales y abiertas a la comunidad fueguina. Ayudar por sobre todo en los sectores donde exista mayores necesidades. En nuestra comisión directiva hay médicos, educadores, abogados y trabajadora social, entre otros.

  • ¿La comunidad está centralizada en Ushuaia?

MS: Sí. Y como cité antes, la idea es armar actividades y visibilizarnos para que otras familias de la Provincia de Tierra del Fuego nos encuentre. En 2019 y 2020 nuestra comunidad de Ushuaia participó activamente de la Fiesta de las Comunidades.

Fue en esa oportunidad que establecimos contacto con AMIA Federal para invitarlos al mayor evento que se viene realizando desde hace más de 16 años, la Fiesta de las Colectividades, organizado por la Asociación de Colectividades Extranjeras de Ushuaia y la Municipalidad. AMIA Federal presentó en la Fiesta al showman de la música israelí, Diego Soler. En ese mismo año logramos convocar a la comunidad de Ushuaia y algunas familias de Rio Grande a la celebración de un Seder de Pesaj y Rosh Hashana Comunitario donde cada familia asistió con alegría al festejo entre familias.

LT: El 15 de diciembre de 2019 se llevó a cabo el Primer Encuentro de Integrantes de la Colectividad Judia de Tierra del Fuego en Tolhuin, del que participaron familias de las tres ciudades de la provincia, al que asistió invitado desde la Kehila de Ushuaia el Rab Ari Sigaloff de Mitzva Tank, quien al enterarse de nuestro encuentro provincial vino para conocernos y resultó una gran sorpresa para nuestra comunidad. En Tierra del Fuego aún no contamos con templo ni rabino.

  •  ¿Es difícil ser judío en Tierra del Fuego?

MS: Creemos que no ha sido fácil ser judío en Tierra del Fuego sintiéndose tan lejos de Buenos Aires y de otras ciudades de origen. Las familias han sufrido por estar tan lejos de los suyos. En cada encuentro con las personas a nuestro paso teníamos la sensación de que el alma judía volvía al cuerpo. Lo más difícil ha sido para cada familia celebrar las festividades judías en completa soledad.

  • ¿Hay establecimientos para encuentros, templos, actividades culturales o deportivas?

Aun no contamos con un templo o establecimiento deportivo. Deseamos con el tiempo poder contar con un espacio comunitario donde podamos celebrar nuestros encuentros. Celebrar festividades judías, realizar actividades culturales, deportivas y ser anfitriones en la región para recibir a los visitantes de otras regiones y en especial de Medinath Israel.
