Por primera vez en un juego olímpico se realizó un momento de silencio en la ceremonia de apertura de los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio por las víctimas israelíes de la masacre de Munich de 1972.
Durante los Juegos Olímpicos de 1972, 11 atletas y entrenadores israelíes fueron asesinados por ocho terroristas palestinos en Munich.
Esta es la primera vez que se rinde homenaje a las víctimas en la ceremonia inaugural de los Juegos Olímpicos.
Las familias de las 11 víctimas habían pedido durante mucho tiempo al Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI) que guardara un minuto de silencio en la ceremonia de apertura, pero se les había negado hasta el viernes.
En 2012, el COI rechazó una campaña internacional en apoyo de un momento de silencio para honrar a las víctimas de la masacre de Munich, y el entonces presidente del COI, Jacques Rogge, lo calificó de «inapropiado».

Dos días antes de los Juegos Olímpicos de 2016 en Brasil, una ceremonia especial celebrada por funcionarios brasileños e israelíes honró a los israelíes asesinados en Munich.
En ese momento de silencio también se honró a las víctimas del COVID-19 en todo el mundo. Las viudas de dos de los atletas asesinados, Ilana Romano y Anki Spitzer, dijeron: «Por fin tenemos justicia para los esposos, hijos y padres que fueron asesinados en Munich».
