B’nai Brith Canada informó que apoya un esfuerzo para cambiar el nombre de los lugares geográficos en la Columbia Británica, la provincia más occidental canadiense, que se nombraron en honor a figuras históricas que colaboraron con los nazis.

Henri Philippe Petain, que da nombre a tres accidentes geográficos en la frontera de Columbia Británica y Alberta, fue presidente de la Francia de Vichy durante la época nazi. Después de la guerra, un tribunal francés lo condenó por traición por su amplia colaboración con los nazis y su traición al pueblo francés.

B’nai Brith dijo en un comunicado que también apoya la retirada del nombre de Charles Bedaux de los lugares geográficos de la Columbia Británica. Bedaux fue un empresario francés conocido por aprovechar sus conexiones con funcionarios nazis y de Vichy para obtener beneficios comerciales.

B’nai Brith sostiene que Canadá debería eliminar todos los topónimos que honran a quienes colaboraron con el régimen nazi en cualquier capacidad, informó Israel Noticias.

“Hemos alertado a los funcionarios de la Oficina de Nombres Geográficos de nuestro apoyo a las iniciativas ciudadanas para cambiar el nombre de ciertos lugares”. Así lo dijo Marvin Rotrand, Director Nacional de la Liga de Derechos Humanos de B’nai Brith Canadá. “Se trata de figuras odiosas que ciertamente no reflejan los valores canadienses y no deberíamos honrarlas de ninguna manera”, agregó.

“Henri Philippe Petain y Charles Bedaux colaboraron con los peores tipos de figuras históricas para lograr sus nefastos objetivos”. Eso añadió Michael Mostyn, director ejecutivo de B’nai Brith Canada. “Los lugares geográficos de Canadá nunca deberían llevar el nombre de figuras deplorables que colaboraron con los nazis”, concluyó.
