Investigadores israelíes incrementan esperanza de vida de ratones

Los investigadores de la Universidad de Bar-Ilan pudieron aumentar la esperanza de vida de los ratones en un promedio del 30%, como se detalla en un comunicado de prensa de la universidad este lunes.

En un estudio publicado recientemente en la revista académica Nature Communications, el profesor Haim Cohen, director del Centro de Longevidad Humana Saludable Sagol de la Universidad de Bar-Ilan; su estudiante de doctorado Asael Roichman; además del Prof. Rafael de Cabo, del Instituto Nacional del Envejecimiento de los Institutos Nacionales de Salud; El Prof. Manuel Serrani, del Instituto de Investigación en Biomedicina de Barcelona; y el Prof. Eyal Gottlieb del Technion, encontraron que los ratones transgénicos tienen altos niveles del gen SIRT6.

El gen, que fue el foco de la investigación, está involucrado en la regulación de muchos procesos biológicos, como el envejecimiento, la obesidad y la resistencia a la insulina de acuerdo al reporte de Enlace Judío.

Los investigadores se centraron en los mecanismos subyacentes al proceso de envejecimiento, que es fundamental para desarrollar intervenciones con el fin de mejorar la salud y aumentar la esperanza de vida.

A través de métodos bioquímicos y análisis metabólicos, los investigadores descubrieron el mecanismo por el cual SIRT6 actúa como una “fuente de juventud”.

En este sentido, se demostró que los animales más viejos habían perdido la capacidad de generar energía sin fuentes externas, mientras que los ratones modificados genéticamente mantuvieron su capacidad de generar energía a partir de otras áreas de almacenamiento, como grasas y ácido láctico.

“Este descubrimiento, combinado con nuestros hallazgos anteriores, muestra que SIRT6 controla la tasa de envejecimiento saludable”, dice el profesor Cohen, de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Vida Mina y Everard Goodman de la Universidad Bar-Ilan.
