En cualquier país donde haya una comunidad de armenios, descendientes de los sobrevivientes del genocidio armenio de 1915-1923, cada 24 de abril, se recuerda al millón y medio de armenios masacrados por el Imperio Otomano.
La fecha simboliza el punto de partida del exterminio por parte de Turquía del pueblo armenio. Ese día fueron sacados de sus hogares, arrestados y deportados para ser asesinados junto sus representantes más destacados del Imperio Otomano. Esa fecha es el comienzo del diabólico plan de exterminio del pueblo armenio en sus territorios ancestrales. Plan que pusieron en marcha los dirigentes del Partido Ittihad de los Jóvenes Turcos y que se consumó con el establecimiento de la República de Turquía fundada por Mustafá Kemal Atatürk en 1923.
El 24 de abril, en la Argentina, por Ley de la Nación No 26199 del año 2006, se declaró “Día de acción por la tolerancia y el respeto entre los pueblos”. En memoria del genocidio sufrido por el pueblo armenio. El armenio fue el primer genocidio del siglo XX. Como periodista, me enorgullece haber invitado a dar testimonio a Rubén Mozian, Presidente de la Fundación “Seranouch y Boghós Arzoumanian”. Por ser un descendiente de sobrevivientes del Holocausto armenio, que, como muchos, vinieron a la Argentina como refugiados. “Soy Rubén Mozian, nacido en el seno de una familia armenio-argentina. Mi padre nació en Siria y mi madre en El Líbano. Mis cuatro abuelos eran armenios, nacidos en el Imperio Otomano, como así también mis ocho bisabuelos, que fueron asesinados en el genocidio perpetrado por Turquía contra la Nación Armenia. Con el tiempo, mis abuelos reconstruyeron sus vidas.
Mi padre y mi madre tenían seis y dos años cuando llegaron a la Argentina, respectivamente, en 1927 y 1928.
Mi familia paterna fue a vivir a Avellaneda y la materna, a Floresta. Mis abuelos maternos comenzaron con la industria del calzado y allá por los años de 1950 llegaron a ser prácticamente los creadores del mocasín legítimo, que era cosido en su planta a la suela y del mismo cuero se continuaba a la capellada.
Mi abuelo paterno, que antes del genocidio había sido diseñador de alfombras. No ejerció aquí su profesión y junto con mi familia paterna pasó a tener negocios de calzado, almacén de suelas y productos para zapateros en Crucecita y Wilde.
Mis padres se conocieron en 1946 en un picnic de la colectividad armenia en Quilmes y luego se casaron. En casa se hablaba castellano.
Mi papá sabía armenio coloquial porque era de una familia armenio parlante. Mi mamá sabía armenio porque lo había aprendido en una escuelita armenia de Floresta allá por los años 30.

Yo nací en 1948 y mi hermana en 1952. La escuela primaria la cursé en el barrio de Wilde.
Terminé sexto grado e hice la secundaria en el Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires.
Mi padre, como siempre fue tradición entre los armenios, quería una buena educación para su hijo y por lo tanto eligió para mí el mejor colegio. No terminé la Universidad, pero sí el Colegio Nacional.
En el Nacional, dada la enseñanza de excelencia que recibí, se estimuló mi identidad armenia que me había sido transmitida por convivencia, pero no por conocimiento.
El haber estudiado latín, inglés y francés me incentivó a rescatar mi origen.
Cuando terminé el bachillerato, empecé como autodidacta a aprender armenio. Hoy me enorgullezco de ser un referente del idioma y la cultura. Hace más de veintisiete años que soy encargado de “Asuntos Culturales y Prensa” de la Embajada de Armenia.
Ser armenio es para mí un sentimiento, que abarca todo lo que comprende una identidad.
Siento esa pertenencia de armenidad por descender de un pueblo antiquísimo de activa participación en el desarrollo de las culturas antiguas.
Además, provengo de familias víctimas del “genocidio armenio”, drama que marcó para siempre nuestra milenaria existencia que no pudo ser eliminada.
Al independizarse, después de setenta años de dominio soviético, en 1991, Armenia demostró al mundo que ninguna dominación ha podido vencer el orgullo imbatible de serlo. Mis abuelos maternos, de apellido Demirdjian, eran de un pueblo llamado Bagché, en Cilicia. Los paternos, es decir los Mozian, de Sivás, en el centro de Anatolia, en el extremo más occidental de la Armenia histórica.

Ningún funcionario ni ninguna repartición oficial turca pudieron explicar jamás porqué ya no hay armenios en esas localidades ni en otras de Turquía. Donde vivieron durante siglos.
La diferencia entre unos y otros abuelos era el idioma. El habla cotidiana de mis abuelos paternos era el armenio y el de los maternos, el turco.
A pesar de esa diferencia, las dos ramas eran de la misma nacionalidad, etnia, religión, costumbres y hasta los nombres y los apellidos seguían siendo armenios.
Fue consecuencia de haber vivido como minoría perseguida y necesitar aprender el idioma del otro para su comunicación y supervivencia.
Hay que resaltar el hecho de que no se trataba de un enfrentamiento entre países, ya que Armenia no existía como estado.
Las víctimas del genocidio eran armenios otomanos, es decir, víctimas del propio estado otomano.
Lo que sí es cierto, es que mantener la identidad sin el idioma fue muy difícil. A pesar de esa dificultad, los armenios, en pleno “Imperio Otomano”, la conservaron,. Hasta llegaron a publicar libros en idioma turco con letras armenias.
Mi papá y mi mamá fueron hijos del exilio. Mi papá nació en Alepo y su padre Bedrós, en Sivás.
En el genocidio armenio mi abuelo perdió a su mujer y sus hijos. Se volvió a casar con la que fue mi abuela Lusvart, también de Sivás, quien junto con su hermana Nevart, fueron las únicas sobrevivientes de una familia de setenta y nueve personas.

Se casaron en 1919 y en 1921 nació mi papá. Fue el primer hijo del desafío de querer vivir, que superó a la barbarie. La familia de mi mamá era de Bagché, en Cilicia, cerca de Siria, donde se había producido la masacre de Adaná en 1909, pogromo antiarmenio generalizado en todo el distrito. En el mismo fue asesinado el padre de mi abuela y en el que mi abuelo materno vio decapitar al cura del puebl. Una escena brutal que no pudo olvidar nunca. Hubo 30.000 muertos.
Ellos hablaban turco, porque las autoridades turcas prohibían hablar armenio, hasta llegar a cortarles la lengua a quienes se atrevían a hacerlo. Ocurrían atrocidades. Había algunos alcaldes y gobernadores más crueles que otros, incluso hubo algunos salvadores, pero fueron las excepciones.

El odio que reinaba era por una decisión del gobierno otomano que había resuelto que los armenios eran un obstáculo para la seguridad del país. Que eran un peligro por su religión, por su identidad, por su formación pro-europea y porque era apetecible su sólida posición económica.
Además, eran cristianos y cuando un gobierno totalitario como el turco quiso cometer un crimen, siempre encontró una justificación relacionada con la seguridad del estado. En ese caso fue fanatizar al pueblo de religión musulmana para una guerra santa contra “los infieles” armenios.
Al morir la mayor parte de nuestras familias, en el genocidio armenio, y luego de quedar consagrada la injusticia discriminatoria con el establecimiento del gobierno turco nacionalista de Mustafá Kemal, los que se salvaron emigraron porque no se les permitió volver a sus hogares.
Mi papá había nacido en 1921, en el 23 su hermano y en el 26 la hermana menor.
Recuerdo que cuando visité Alepo busqué en los archivos del Arzobispado Armenio y encontré las actas de bautismo de los tres.
Mi padre partió de Siria hacia la Argentina cuando tenía seis años. Aquí ya vivía Serop, el único hermano de mi abuelo, que había pasado lo peor de la tragedia del Holocausto armenio.
Era soltero y había llegado a este país, porque tuvo noticias de que allí había progreso y generosidad hacia los inmigrantes.
Todo esto sucedía en la época en la que gobernaba Marcelo Torcuato de Alvear (1922-1928). Argentina era un país de paz, sin discriminación, con las puertas abiertas a la inmigración.
Serop Mozian, junto con un grupo de jóvenes refugiados como él, fundó en 1924 un periódico armenio, “Voz de Protesta”. Se imprimía cerca de la esquina de Pavón y Mitre, en el corazón de Avellaneda.

Después de cuatro años de ese proyecto, pidió a su familia que viniera. Planeaba que la hermana de la esposa de su hermano, se casara con él.
Sacaron pasajes, se fueron de Alepo a Beirut y en barco hasta Marsella, de ahí en un tren al puerto de Le Havre en el norte Francia, rumbo a Buenos Aires.
Los primeros años estaban deslumbrados con Buenos Aires. Fueron bien recibidos y encontraron trabajo en el frigorífico de Berisso. Se fueron luego a vivir a Crucecita, en Avellaneda, alquilaron una pieza y enseguida empezaron a ser zapateros remendones.
En las fotos que tengo, ya habiendo estado varios años en el país, parecían aristócratas. Hoy, a la distancia, pienso que habrá sido muy triste para ellos haber estado en el otro extremo del mundo, sin tener noticias de sus familiares de su tierra natal, porque habían muerto o quedado insepultos.
El genocidio del pueblo armenio era el tema cotidiano en las casas de los abuelos. Recuerdo que lo me contaba mi abuela y mi abuelo. Pero no tan cruel como lo que contaba la hermana de mi abuela paterna. Mi abuelo, que había perdido a su familia, era diseñador de tapices, un gran artista en su especialidad.
Ella acongojada decía que, a mediados de 1915, en la plaza pública de su ciudad, un bando militar anunció que todos tenían que abandonar sus hogares con lo que tenían puesto. Y hasta el día de hoy, cuando los armenios visitan lo que fueron las casas de sus antepasados en Turquía actual, los turcos asustados les preguntan si vinieron a buscar sus pertenencias y las monedas de oro, que habían enterrado en sus huertas y jardines.
No se dan cuenta de que en lugar de oro vamos a conectarnos con nuestras raíces.
Mi abuela materna, Ovsanna, contaba lo que había sido el camino del destierro: a una parte de los arrestados los cargaban como ganado y los transportaban en la línea del ferrocarril Estambul-Bagdad, que habían construido los alemanes.
Los trasladaban de día. Los hacían bajar de noche y dormir a la intemperie. Al amanecer se hacía un recuento de quiénes sobrevivieron y quiénes habían muerto.
La esposa del hermano de Khatcher, mi abuelo materno, que vivía en Floresta, también relataba cómo llegó a correr a los pajaritos para quitarles la miguita de pan que llevaban en el pico para comérsela. La hermana de mi abuela materna, que ya había sido mamá, fue al destierro con su bebé en brazos. Al no poder ni amamantarlo ni tener nada para alimentarlo, pensó que la criatura había muerto, al enterrarla la cubrió con arena, pero vio que se movió esa tumba improvisada y, partida por el dolor, sin dudar le tiró más arena porque no había esperanzas de que sobreviviera.

Hay otra entre tantas historias como cuando a mi abuela materna la llevaron andando cientos de kilómetros, junto a tantos otros. Para que muriesen en el camino.
Pero quiero diferenciar entre lo que es destrucción y exterminio.
Los turcos querían destruir a la nación armenia, exterminarla y guardar un armenio para exhibirlo en un museo. Para que supieran con el tiempo cómo era aquel ejemplar.
Ese objetivo falló, porque nunca ningún exterminio fue total. Siempre queda un rastro y alguien para dar testimonio, para denunciar el crimen. Este Holocausto tuvo antecedentes en la decadencia del Imperio Otomano. Los turcos habían perdido territorios y guerras. Los Balcanes, Egipto, Libia y grandes derrotas con los árabes sometidos a su dominación.
Turquía estaba rodeada de países y pueblos que habían sufrido su vecindad y cuya gente asociaba a los turcos con la figura del enemigo.
Fue el caso de griegos, búlgaros, sirios, iraníes, armenios e iraquíes. La minoría armenia en Turquía molestaba a la dirigencia. Por el deseo de fundar un imperio turco-mongol, desde el Mediterráneo hasta Mongolia, y la unión de los pueblos de ese origen.

Geográficamente Armenia estaba en el medio de ese proyecto, y otros factores, como la posición económica de los armenios, su cultura, la figuración, la religión, las afinidades europeas, la civilización, influyeron en el proyecto de exterminio.
A ambos lados de la frontera ruso-turca, la población era armenia. De un lado, súbditos del zar, del otro, súbditos del sultán. Los turcos acusaban a los armenios de ser agentes rusos. Las organizaciones políticas y sociales armenias aconsejaban en caso de guerra, mantener la fidelidad a los estados de los que formaban parte.
El genocidio armenio no fue un genocidio religioso, pero como todo genocidio político, necesitaba aprovechar el fanatismo religioso como medio de ejecución. Pusieron el fanatismo musulmán al servicio de la propaganda del panturanismo, que pregonaba la unificación política, étnica y cultural de todos los pueblos turcomanos.
Luego de la Primera Guerra Mundial, el Imperio Otomano quedó prácticamente desmembrado

y dividido en zonas de influencia de las potencias europeas, y Mustafá Kemal llegó al poder como salvador de Turquía, mediante la creación de un nacionalismo apenas incipiente, ya que el Imperio Otomano era un cúmulo de etnias y naciones. En lugar de curar las heridas del genocidio y permitir el retorno de los sobrevivientes a sus propiedades, Mustafá Kemal completó el crimen, a legalizar la expropiación de todas las pertenencias de los armenios masacrados o deportados. Lo que hizo fue consumar el genocidio y la homogenización de Turquía. Quizás de allí le valga el “Atatürk”, “padre de los turcos.
Para terminar mi testimonio, quiero decir que los armenios en la Argentina, mantienen un proverbial agradecimiento a este país, porque sus mayores venían de una tragedia, y se encontraron con un paraíso. La comunidad tiene estructuras sólidas, instituciones activas, siete escuelas armenias integrales y siete iglesias. Cuando los refugiados sobrevivientes llegaban al país, los que les habían precedido, iban a recibirlos en sus carros, muchos fueron a vivir a los conventillos de la época, en armonía con inmigrantes de otros orígenes. Especialmente con la comunidad judía, nos sentimos hermanados, el Holocausto Judío también ocurrió porque la humanidad no condenó en su momento el genocidio armenio ni tomó las prevenciones necesarias para que no volviera a ocurrir nada parecido.

El genocidio contra el pueblo armenio, también llamado “Holocausto Armenio”, o “Gran Tragedia”, fue la deportación forzosa y el intento de exterminar a la Nación Armenia. Se calcula que entre un millón y medio y dos millones de civiles armenios fueron perseguidos y asesinados por el gobierno de los Jóvenes Turcos en el Imperio Otomano, entre 1915 y 1923.
Se caracterizó por su brutalidad en las masacres y la utilización de marchas forzadas, con deportaciones en condiciones extremas, que los conducían a la muerte en los campos de concentración de la localidad de Der Zor, en el desierto de Siria. Durante este periodo, otros grupos étnicos cristianos también fueron masacrados por el Imperio Otomano, entre ellos los asirios y los griegos pónticos. Algunos historiadores consideran que estos actos forman parte de la misma política genocida. Como resultado directo del genocidio, alrededor del mundo se formaron comunidades de la diáspora armenia.
El comienzo del genocidio se conmemora el 24 de abril de 1915, cuando las autoridades oto-manas detuvieron a doscientos treinta y cinco relevantes personalidades armenias en Constantinopla, la actual Estambul, que era la capital imperial. En los días siguientes, la cifra de detenidos ascendió a seiscientos. Una orden del gobierno central decretó la deportación de toda la población armenia del Imperio Otomano. La marcha forzada por cientos de kilómetros atravesó zonas desérticas en la que la mayor parte pereció víctima del hambre, la sed, las privaciones y los ataques del ejército y de las formaciones irregulares armadas. Los sobrevivientes eran robados y violados por los gendarmes que debían protegerlos, con frecuencia acompañados por bandas de asesinos y bandoleros.

El gobierno de la República de Turquía, sucesora del Imperio Otomano, no admite que se haya tratado de un genocidio. Sostiene que las muertes no fueron el resultado de un plan de exterminio masivo, sistemático y premeditado dispuesto por el Estado Otomano, sino que se debieron a las luchas interétnicas, las enfermedades y el hambre, durante el confuso período de la Primera Guerra Mundial. A pesar de esta tesis, casi todos los estudiosos, incluso algunos turcos, opinan que los hechos encajan en la definición actual de genocidio. Se lo considera el primero moderno y sirvió de ejemplo al Holocausto Judío en la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
La Comunidad Internacional también reconoció esta matanza como un genocidio y más de veintidós países del mundo expresaron su reconocimiento explícito. Aunque prácticamente ningún país se atreve a negarlo, con excepción de Turquía y algunos aliados. Uruguay fue el primer estado en reconocer aquel crimen de lesa humanidad, en 1965.
El Papa Francisco lo condenó y calificó como el primer genocidio del siglo XX y “una tragedia inaudita”. Esta condena generó ataques verbales y amenazas por parte del gobierno turco de Recep Tayyip Erdogan, que considera que no existen pruebas que vinculen al Imperio Otomano con el exterminio de la población armenia. Como si su desaparición no fuera prueba suficiente. Las Naciones Unidas, parlamentos nacionales y regionales se han unido a la causa del pueblo armenio.
En 1985, la “Subcomisión de Derechos Humanos de la ONU”, lo reconoció como un crimen de lesa humanidad que no prescriben al no cesar la responsabilidad penal con el transcurso del tiempo.

El reconocimiento efectuado por algunos países al genocidio armenio, generó el rechazo por parte de Turquía. El gobierno turco retiró a su embajador en el Vaticano, y acusó al Papa de “discriminar en el sufrimiento de las personas”. El canciller de Turquía, Mevlüt Çavusoglu, expresó al respecto: “El Papa desestimó las atrocidades que turcos y musulmanes sufrieron durante la Primera Guerra Mundial y sólo resalta el sufrimiento de los cristianos, especialmente de los armenios.”
La República de Turquía y la República de Armenia firmaron un acuerdo en octubre de 2009, para el restablecimiento de relaciones diplomáticas y la reapertura de su frontera común, aún no concretada. Pero esos protocolos fueron rechazados fundamentalmente por los condicionamientos que quería imponer Turquía.
Tanto el gobierno de Armenia, como la diáspora dispersa en países como Francia, Rusia, Líbano, Estados Unidos, Australia, Argentina y otros estados latinoamericanos, las instituciones comunitarias de todo el mundo, continúan su lucha incansable para tratar de sensibilizar al mundo sobre esta causa. El reconocimiento y la condena del “Genocidio Armenio” forman parte de la agenda de la política exterior de la República de Armenia, independiente desde el 21 de setiembre de 1991.
Fue especialmente significativo el reconocimiento del “Parlamento Alemán”, que no sólo reconoce lo ocurrido, sino que pide disculpas por la participación alemana, ya que el “Imperio Alemán” era aliado del “Imperio Otomano” durante la primera guerra mundial. Recientemente también fue reconocido y condenado por ambas cámaras del Congreso de los Estados Unidos de América.

La comunidad internacional debe continuar apoyando a Armenia en su lucha por el reconocimiento del genocidio cometido por Turquía y se unan al mismo.
Es la mejor forma de prevenir la repetición de crímenes similares. Es difícil que la Organización de las Naciones Unidas obligue con una resolución a Turquía a reparar esta deuda histórica, pues como es bien conocido por muchos de nosotros, este país es aliado tradicional de los Estados Unidos en “Oriente Próximo” y miembro de la OTAN, por lo que cualquier sanción sería vetada.
En la actualidad las relaciones internacionales y la geopolítica internacional se reconfiguraron.
Los pueblos que históricamente son objeto de injusticias, despojos e intervenciones, como lo ocurrido con los armenios, encuentran cada vez más la solidaridad de países dispuestos a hacerle frente a los atropellos de los estados imperialistas, a fin de que se imponga la legalidad internacional, cese la impunidad, y se respeten los derechos humanos y el derecho internacional.”
